There is a lot of truth to this, and we need to do a whole lot better educating our young people. Although with a little understanding of the subject it's pretty easy to see that this comes at severe detriment to other aspects of life such as actually having one, burned out at 20, and becoming suicidal over an A-.

Instead of the broad statement "we have to do a lot better at educating our young people" (which is true) I would also add that we need to do a lot better with pushing the kids who have the intelligence and drive to succeed. I think every child should be pushed hard in school until the end of high school. But those that show a special interest and talent should be pushed even harder. I didn't try very hard in high school, I was too consumed with playing sports and losing my virginity. However, I was still in the AP/IB classes and skated by. I can only imagine what the normal math, science and English classes were like. I also grew up in an upper middle class area so it would be even harder for me to imagine what bullshit classes are like in lower income areas. There's also too much focus on memorization instead of applicable use. That's why I like foreign language classes, they force a child to think in another language. Science should be fun for kids too. Math should be fun in the sense that with even the most basic algebra, trigonometry and geometry it's incredible the everyday uses they can have (too many times I hear how it's not useful in your adult life... well yeah, if you've got a shitty job). I think kids should also be forced to take a class on entrepreneurship or at least running a business. An extended class on how our government works and how things get done would be extremely beneficial with understanding what's going on in our world. Too many kids graduate high school not only having know idea what to do (which is fine), but having little idea what options are available to them.

Interesting topic SilnWest. Thanks for the link, I posted a link myself in your thread. The guy has some observations regarding the TIMSS video study.

The education system in this country sucks balls. that's really all there is to it. Do I know how to fix it? No. But it's bad.

We need to scrap the whole education system. Forcing kids to to temporarily memorize answers to complete a standardized test is not teaching. Give children projects or complex problems to solve that allows individual critical thinking and group problem solving. Give them the basic reading, writing, and mathematical tools but let them expand their interests and help them along the way. Give them critical thinking skills.

The new Common Core standards are very much pointed in this direction.

12evanF, sounds like the video clip I posted in SilnWest's thread, comparing American education to Japan, other places.

Really? We are going to pull out racist remarks like that now? Chinese people in America cant drive? And are you talking about actual Chinese or Chinese Americans? Or all Asians? Do you refer to people of Irish descent as Irish? No..this isnt "pc bullshit" dont go down that road. Its common decency. People come from all over the world to the US, but only if they look like you do they get to be real Americans? What year do you live in?

What year do you live in? asian and african immigrants are both horrible drivers, they come from a nation with lax driving regulations and tend to carry them onward to the US. I am not racist, and i went to a extremely multi racially diverse school and asians dont even trust asian drivers. i have seen some pretty reckless drivers (pretty sure they are not being reckless intentionally) in my multi racially diverse area and they are mostly asians and africans.
