I just don't get why folks do this. Yard signs are bad enough. Has anyone here ever been won over or even made aware of a candidate that they then went on to support because of yard signs or bumper stickers?
Yard signs at least go away when the campaign is over, mostly; those that don't become litter (far too many do) anyway.
Bumper stickers, those little gems are gifts that keep giving! All over Port Townsend there are still a lot of '08 Obama stickers, and a fair number of McCain Palin ones. There is even a jackwad with Dubya stickers proudly plastered all over his SUV.
I actually wonder how often does road rudeness, road rage and even physical altercation become a result of the perverse pride some folks show in backing candidates.
So what I'm asking, at least to those of you who put that crap on your car, is why? Does it not occur to you that you are likely insuring that at least 1/3 of other drivers are going to dislike you without ever having met you face to face? Do you get a thrill out of offending people who voted the other way? Does it feel good to lord it over others that your guy won, or be the martyr displaying your pride in voting for the loser?
I realize it ain't that big a deal and it ain't gonna change any time soon, but still, I will forever be asking myself is there any real point in it? I don't think it adds anything positive to the car or the campaign. If it could be proven, even in a small percentage of cases to have induced road rage incidence, should we stop it?
Sorry, it's just one of the most senseless things about our system IMO anyway, a personal pet peeve.

I don't really see any reason to stop them, they aren't any worse than so many of the bumper stickers out there. Personally, I'm not a "bumper sticker" kind of guy, and even if I were, I don't think there's a political candidate I could say I believe in enough to warrant such a permanent addition.
I really think that people put on bumper stickers, then are either just too lazy to scrape them off, too cheap to by a chemical to get them off easily, or just don't really care enough to remove them later.
I've known people before who have purchased used cars with a variety of differing bumper stickers, and I ask them about them, and they mostly just don't seem to care enough to bother removing them.

Let's get our state legislators on it. This needs to be stopped and made a felony, post-haste!

I've always thought having political bumper stickers is a dumb idea. I don't want to incite any sort of anger in people I know or even people I don't know.

I'd totally put a political bumper sticker on my car if I found one that made fun of both parties on it. I'm sure there are some, but I haven't tried looking.

I briefly thought about seeing if I could get a custom one that read, "My candidate is so much better than your stupid candidate." But then I lost interest.

I don't see anything wrong with political bumper stickers. What's wrong with sharing your views with the public? Why do you guys hate free speech so much !

Exactly and nobody is proposing doing away with them. What I said is, if it could be proved they have an effect on road rage in a negative way, then things might be considered. But that's just my point, to ask why anyone feels the need to plaster their car with them? What benefit if any is there? To me it's a pointless exercise, just trying to understand why anyone thinks it's a worthwhile thing?

I don't know that political bumper stickers incite road rage any more than rival sports team paraphernalia on a car.

Ron Paul stickers pissed me off because you know those idiots like to smell their own farts.
I've never felt any rage towards someone because they had a Romney sticker. I have a little bit of rage when I get behind an idiot in a Prius with an Obama sticker because they hang out with the RP sticker guys.
However, I have seen 49er stickers (you know, those big ones on the back of pickups) and wanted to ram them off the side of the road.

My favorite is from the Nixon era. SHUCK THE COXSACKER!! ( you kids probably won't remember this as its about the Nixon Whitehouse firing Archibald Cox who was investigating the WaterGate breakin) A portent of the future I guess as the Cox Sacker resigned the presidency. Saw this the first time on a dorm door at WAZZU. Favorite bumper sticker of all time political or no FEDERAL AID HELL...ITS OUR MONEY!!
