Blame is by definition assigned. People choose to or not to assign blame to guns. I certainly think the tool is partly responsible for the damage it causes.

Its easy to be silly and ask if a hammer is to blame or a rock is to blame, but those items aren't designed to kill. The A-bomb killed 100,000 people in Hiroshima. Was that responsibility solely on the person dropping the bomb? Blaming only that man takes childlike reasoning.

Sole responsibility for a bomb constructed by thousands of scientists working together and dropped at the decision of a ton of military personnel and with the presidents approval? I think that it was the fault of everyone involved. That isn't to say that if one person involved had stepped out or dissented that it would have changed the final decision, but everyone has a shared responsibility for what happened. I don't put any blame on the a-bomb because it wouldn't have been created or killed a single person if it weren't for the people who created and used it.

Yes, it requires more than just a gun to kill someone. It takes a PERSON, wielding the gun, pulling its trigger, to kill someone. If a man bashes another man's head with a hammer, killing him in the process, is it the hammer's fault?

Who's fault was Hiroshima? The bomb (the tool), the man that dropped the bomb, or the man that made the bomb? Or are all three culpable?

I would say that the culpability stops at the pilot of the Enola Gay, though Harry S. Truman, his joint chiefs, and the various military commanders between the President and the Enola Gay crew, are most culpable. Faulting an inanimate object like a nuclear weapon is silly, so is faulting the designer.

This isn't an apples-to-apples comparison, though, since most shootings in this country happen between individuals as a spontaneous act, absent the strictures of military command.
