Bye-bye Boatee!!

  • As you may know my husband, Brett and I live on a narrowboat...

We have lived aboard Elsie for five and a half years and have decided its time for bricks and mortar. We've been talking about it for a while now. Neither of us want to stay aboard for another winter and we both want to be closer to family.

We have handed in our notices at work and are going to move away from Shropshire in the West Midlands and move in with Brett's mum in Clacton-On-Sea, 250 miles away on the south east coast to begin with, then once we have secured jobs we're gonna get a place in Colchester which is about 20 minutes from Clacton... At least that's the plan!!

Brett put Elsie on a boat sales website last week and if by this Friday she hasn't had any interest from buyers, then we are gonna take her to a brokerage and they can sell her on our behalf.

So our adventure on the canal is ending and a new one's about to commence. :)

The lyrics to Rush's Headlong Flight would seem appropriate right now.... With a couple of changes:

"I have stoked the fires on Elsie's stoves,
Steered our little ship down the canal..."

    :)

Yeah there's mixed emotion... Some things we will miss, other we won't. But she's kept us warm and dry for all this time and we called her home. :)

  • Update: This is our plan for the next few days:
Saturday we are picking up a van and packing and loading it, except for some clothes, food and the cat.

Sunday Brett is going by himself to take the van to his mums and unload it. I'm staying aboard to sort out any remaining bits and clean the cupboards.

    Monday Brett is coming back.

Probably Wednesday we are taking Elsie to Norbury brokerage.

Also: There's a lady who's interested in buying is coming to visit and have a look on Saturday afternoon!

  • Wow! I'm pooped!!

We started packing up our stuff at about 10ish. Stopped at about 6. We've still got a bit more to do. I didn't realise we had so much somehow crammed in here!!

The lady came down about 3 and had a look round. Brett gave her the grand tour. She took some photos and seems genuinely interested!! :)

Not surprised you're tired. Moving is flat out hard work. I did it yet again about a year ago and hired a couple of guys to help and still was exhausted afterwards. Of course it doesn't help that I'm on the very far side of my youth. :les: :D

Hope the rest of the process goes well and you get the boat sold with no problems.

  • Update:

Brett has gone in the van to his mums with the bulk of the stuff.

He left about 8:30, then at 9:05 I got a call from his mum saying her hit a pigeon which cracked the windscreen!! He took the van to the place we'd rented it from which was open.... Just! They were on a short day. They arranged for him to have another van and he had to unpack one and reload the other all by himself!! Poor Brett!

He made it ok to his mums. I spoke to him a few minutes ago and he said that because of the stormy weather threatening the country he would have to see what it's like in the morning before attempting to return. We did prepare for this and I've got plenty of food and fuel.

Meanwhile I've packed what was left and started giving the boat a good clean which I'll finish tomorrow.

It's weird not having him here.

  • Luckily he wasn't delayed. He waited til the weather had eased then came back yesterday.

But the lady who's interested has said she and her boyfriend would like to put a deposit down, then when we take the boat to the brokers she is going to arrange for a surveyor to inspect Elsie. :)

  • Update:

The potential buyer had asked for a hull survey, before she made her decision about buying, which took place yesterday. The surveyor said that the hull had lost about 1.5 millimeters along the water line and that the boats gearbox needs repairing. The total sum is about £3000.

The buyer took this into account and made an offer, minus the money for the repairs, which we've accepted.

HOWEVER, the surveyor also said that he would like to take a closer look at the hull after it had need properly cleaned up.

At this point the sale is now put on hold until he can take a look, in about a week and a half... The buyer could still pull out...

We will have to wait and see....

How much of a hassle is it to move your former home to the broker?

    Thanks!!

Not too bad actually. It's about 3 hours boat drive away. :)

3 hours of boat driving? How terrible! :sarcasm_off:

    Thanks Radish!

Actually I was sick yesterday. Came down with a cold. :(

    Feeling better today. :)

We might not celebrate Thanksgiving but Black Friday has come to our country! And true to Black Friday tradition fights broke out!

  • So you're no longer walking on water?

Good trick while it lasted. We needed your help yesterday in San Francisco.

  • So... thought I would provide an update....

Hubby has got a job! Which he hates cause the hours are terrible, but he's now looking for another as it's often the way that you can get a job easier if you're already working...

As for me, despite sending out over 150 applications, I have had just one interview, and didn't get that job either, so the search continues...

One the upside, both hubby and I have been doing IT courses at college. We have been taking the European Computer Driving Licence, which covers Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Improving Productivity.

I was asked if there were any other courses I would like to take and I've signed up for a Maths course.

Brett has passed all but the Productivity, which he is resitting next week.

And I've done so well that the college has offered me voluntary work, helping others with their courses! It doesn't affect my benefits and will help with experience and lookgreat on my resume!!

I started today. I will only be doing one day a week to start... I've been told that many of those who now work for the college in paid positions started out being volunteers so this may turn into a job!

I am looking for part time work whilst I'm there...

Also we are currently looking for a place to rent. At the moment we are looking to stay in Clacton for now, rather than Colchester so that I can do this volunteer work as I can't drive.

So yeah, this is where we're currently at! :)
