  • Has anybody here ever had a cavity filled and a crown put on without having to go to an endodontist for root canal work?

A (previously filled) molar has been killing me this past week and am nearly at my wits end.

  • Why did they want to do a crown? Usually they do a crown to keep a tooth together either after a root canal or to hold together a fracture. I just went through the worst root canal ever! So I can empathise!

  • I'd go root canal and just end any issues that could arise.

lol that dont always work, I got an abscess from a broken tooth that i never took care of and the abscess went to another tooth, needless to in August I have all 4 wisdoms pulled just for the discount on my insurance and a molar next to my broken wisdom tooth.

The cost of playing basketball with the neighborhood gang members.

  • Thanks guys, the original filling has been in at least 10 years so I can't attribute that to poor work by the original dentist.

Fortunately I know a good dentist that is willing to let me pay by the month and is a personal friend (used to coach his kid). Still though, don't want to pay for more than necessary...but this problem sucks, esp without dental insurance that covers these kind of procedures.

  • You should really be being told which one you need, not which one you want.

(As Throwdown says; Root canal solves everything though. Sounds more terrifying than it actually is.)

  • Til I got my tooth just pulled? About 3, one to a dentist who gave me Percocet, and then a consultation at the oral surgeon, and then the surgery day, plus a post op. But if it's just for a root canal I wouldn't know, I just know if the tooth is broken or at a point where it's useless to do it, the dentist will recommend the tooth be extracted.

I'd be on the phone with the dentist though asap, oral pain is one of the worst pains ever, and it might be something more, need to get them x-rays done so they can see what's up.

  • I had a root canal done that required they take all the stuff out about halfway through and give me shots directly into the tooth.

As much as I hate going to dentists it still wasn't that bad. In fact I left eh dentist and hit the road on my usual trip and was in motels for the next 3 nights.

So tho we've all had problems, they aren't really that bad.

Wait till they pull all your upper teeth at one time, slap a new plate in your mouth they have to pry your mouth open with a massive pry tool from the carpentar's toolbox.(I'm exaggerating here but it seems like it at first) and tell you to go on your merry way.

2 days later I was in Moscow, Id. on a couple of sales calls. Had brought my Mother along so she could get out and we had some time together. I was early so we stopped and had breakfast and I had bacon and eggs and got along fine.

  • From my experiences, once it gets to the point of the nerve being exposed it is too late to do anything other than a root canal. They really aren't that bad. I did let the dentist give me novacaine though since they actually use these long skinny files to get the root out. Normally I don't let the dentist use anything because I cannot stand the fat mouth, numb feeling.

I have to admit mentioning the fat mouth is a straight line almost to good to pass up. This even after a recent comment you made about me.

  • Did you guys have the root canal done at an endodontist or by your regular dentist?

Our regular dentist doesn't do that kind of work. Always recommends an endodontist.

  • So I went to the dentist this week and it turns out I apparently don't need the root canal at this point. I had 2 deep cavities in back teeth filled and sealed. He said its about a 70 percent chance I won't need one. That's the good news.

The bad news is there is still some slight discomfort in that area that has been nagging, but I trust his judgment and he looked at the X rays and didn't think the pulpitis had spread to the root.

Now the bad news: it seems as I will have to have several teeth crowned eventually because I've been wearing my back teeth away due to grinding at night...ugh.
