How Do I Fix an IP Conflict?

  • I need this in dumb person terms too.

Can't get on anything, connecting to .NET is hit and miss, internets moving slow, and I got this thing that popped up saying I have an IP conflict.

The only thing I can think of that has changed was I installed avast on my parents laptop, but I don't see how that could put us on the same IP.

  • Are your IP address configured statically, or dynamically?

    Is statically like Wifi?

  • You have to look at the control panel of your PC/laptop. Find the network devices and right click the properties on your network interface (which may be a problem if you don't know much about networking). You could start a Dos Shell and type "ipconfig /all" to have a list of all the network interfaces and their addresses.

Here is an example of the output from the command:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) Gigabit CT Desktop Adapter
    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : xxxxxx
    DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
    Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
    Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : xxxxxx
    IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.24(Preferred)
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Saturday, June 22, 2013 1:15:56 PM
    Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Monday, June 24, 2013 11:58:06 AM
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
    DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
    DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . : xxxxx
    DHCPv6 Client DUID. . . . . xxxx

    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

You can see from the DHCP Enabled == Yes that it is configured to use DHCP for an address.

Your router could also be the culprit. Maybe a reboot of the router or look at the current devices given a DHCP address by the router. Or you could have two DHCP Servers somehow in your local LAN that are giving out addresses (bad news). I doubt that.

  • I would do this on any and all devices in your network that are Windows boxes. Your phone, printer etc also are going to get an auto-assigned IP address from the router as well. Can you describe your network and the known devices you have using it? 20 devices? 10? All Windows or game boxes? You could try shutting down systems if you don't know who is conflicting with you.

  • So you could try resetting the router first, if you can find a good time. I would run the "ipconfig /all" command on each of the laptops to make sure the IPs are different. If you find two with the same and they use DHCP, try rebooting both.

And usually the phones only use wifi if you enable them to. I have mine automatically do this but some folks don't. The iPad will show you the IP address it was assigned when you go to the settings page for WiFi. Write that one down or remember it so you can eventually know each device's IP address. Same with the XBox consoles.

Hmm. So backing up before we totally get things out of control. The router has a DNS address identified and provides it to the DHCP Client once they get their IP address. On the host that has the DNS failure message, what does ipconfig /all look like on it (assuming Windows host)? It probably will show the router, so now you may have to look at the router through its admin web page to see what things look like there. Nothing should have changed so I am wondering if someone hacked you and has your PC using a bogus network configuration?

  • On the PC with the bad DNS address try this from the DOS shell:

    C:\Users\James-PC>nslookup
    Default Server: xxxx.xxx.xxx.com
    Address: 172.xx.xx.xx

    Server: xxx.xxx.xxx.com
    Address: 172.xx.xx.xx

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: cnn-56m.gslb.vgtf.net
    Addresses: 157.166.249.10
    157.166.249.11
    157.166.248.10
    157.166.248.11
    Aliases: http://www.cnn.com
    http://www.cnn.com.vgtf.net

    > quit

That should give you a warm and fuzzy about your DNS setup.

  • Ouch!

So what did you do? Reset the router or is it the internet provider who may be the issue? Time to get on the phone and have the professionals walk you through it.

  • Sounds like it was just a regional issue?

Anyway, if your stuff is getting nasty about sharing IPs, I've had luck with ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew. Does the same thing a reboot does, just more quickly.

usually the easiest way is to open up a command prompt (start-run: CMD)

    ipconfig /release (enter)
    then ipconfig /renew (enter)

    done.
