  • **** yeah I curse. More so on the forums than in real life. But I'll drop a well placed colorful metaphor in a live conversation on occasion, usually for emphasis. I actually had a lady at work once *gasp* when I cussed because she didn't think I did.

  • Very rarely.

But Dang nabbit none of those answers fit. Don't think its wrong. Don't think its unintelligent. Don't wish I never did and i'm not happy that I do occasionally. Just not a usual part of my vocabulary.

  • I don't think it's unintelligent to use profanity. Hell, words that are categorized as profane change all the time. I remember in the 80's when "That sucks" was considered profane.

One of my literature college professors said that profane words were some of the best adjectives/adverbs. She said that using those words got your point across much better than using "weaker" words. And I agreed with her.

Now, in my family, we'll cuss, but we rarely drop the F-bomb. Though, it's used occasionally when appropriate.

  • With my friends, I swear a lot. I try not to use it excessively as I try to often find new and fresh ways to describe things, but on an angry rant, literally nothing feels better than cussing every other word to keep the cadence.

I tend not to swear more than damn, ass or hell around people until I've heard them swear myself. Once its an accepted form of communication, I try to use vulgarities like painters use colors(works cited A Christmas Story).

On these very message boards, I've been banned on multiple occasions over the last decade due to my propensity to cuss like a sailor, but I've toned it down over the years.

Sometimes cussing helps you make a point, and sometimes it hurts your point, finding the distinguishing line is a lifelong exploratory journey.

  • Time, place, and manner is the key to everything, including swearing. And I don't understand why one would limit their vocabulary because of offended sensibilities. While it's not appropriate to curse at times, certainly at other times it is. And sometimes the best word to use in a particular situation is a curse word. Using curse words because you've run out of clean vocabulary is a poor way to go, but at times not using them is just as limiting.

Woody Allen once said, "Some guy hit my fender, and I told him, 'Be fruitful and multiply,' but not in those words." Not much better way of describing that, attitude and all, than the way he did. And if he'd used the cuss words, it would have lost much of its humorous punch.

However, I dare anyone to come up with a better way of shooting Steve Martin's airport car rental scene in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles without using the cuss words. Again, hard to argue a better punch line than the way they set that up.

  • Yeah, I swear, but #3 applies, too. Face it, what we call "adult" language is actually adolescent language. ;)

I'm pretty good with the time, place, and who's gonna hear side, but I can cuss when I need/want to. Frankly, if I think I need to use profanity to emphasize a point, I'm insulting the intelligence of my audience by thinking they won't understand something more sophisticated.

  • Compare the two versions of Cee Lo Green's song "Forget You" and get back with me as to whether swearing is simply a function of those too illiterate to find a more accurate word to describe a situation.

  • Most of us in the older generation (I'm almost 70) were brought up to NOT use vulgar terms or cussing in front of children or ladies. Now days it seems that the vast majority of the younger crowd use the F-word in every sentence. I feel some of that is just for shock value, but IMO it is considerably unattractive and down right vulgar especially in front of kids and women. I have however had occasion to hear vulgar language even from women and small children, that's just wrong.

  • I don't swear in front of employees, my in-laws or my cat but in board meetings, my family, my friends or when my cat's not looking. Watch out.
I enjoy ruining threads by making them about personal attacks and then commenting about how personal attacks make the other person's argument invalid.
