Time, place, and manner is the key to everything, including swearing. And I don't understand why one would limit their vocabulary because of offended sensibilities. While it's not appropriate to curse at times, certainly at other times it is. And sometimes the best word to use in a particular situation is a curse word. Using curse words because you've run out of clean vocabulary is a poor way to go, but at times not using them is just as limiting.
Woody Allen once said, "Some guy hit my fender, and I told him, 'Be fruitful and multiply,' but not in those words." Not much better way of describing that, attitude and all, than the way he did. And if he'd used the cuss words, it would have lost much of its humorous punch.
However, I dare anyone to come up with a better way of shooting Steve Martin's airport car rental scene in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles without using the cuss words. Again, hard to argue a better punch line than the way they set that up.
