Help me pick out my new plate

  • My father is passing on his original owner, 1987 Buick Grand National to me this week. I do have to go out of state to get and it will need to get WA plates. Now there is a new bill, which will probably pass that allows for Seahawks license plates (Sounders also)

For those of you who know what these cars really are, I don't have to explain. The numbers are insane, 520HP at the wheels and will lift the front wheels off the ground if the car isn't ripping tread off of the tires. Still under 50K miles. So I want to get a personalized Seahawks plate (if available in the next few months) and would like some ideas. Either Seahawk or Gearhead to show my allegiance on a legend to drag racing.

  • Good luck getting a Seahawks plate. I got one back in 1995 in Oregon and the first 7 or 8 combinations I tried were already taken. Finally I ended up with C HOXS. Living in Washington i'm sure it will be even harder to find one that's not already taken.

  • It isn't the name.. It is the actual plate with the Hawks theme, like the Mariner's ones that help build the stadium, or LEO, Fireman type plates.

What I am going to do is get a Hawks plate and either have a Hawks reference on it or a reference to the awesomeness of the Grand National.

I just started storming and so far:

    HAWKLVR
    HOKLOVR
    ALL-IN
    12HOCKS
    RICEATR - Import reference
    YULLOSE
    500HPGN
    HWKPRID
    RWGOHKS
    NINRSUK
BEASTMD .. Wait, I think I like that one. Works for both the car and Lynch as long as he is here or retires a Hawk.

Ehh.. I will keep thinking. I got time.

  • I think they will be like square dance plates as an example. or maybe like the ones for the Huskys/Wazzu. What a great idea.

I have a couple of regular plates on older cars. In Washington State when your car is either 25 or 30 years old you can get a set of plates from the year of manufacture. Those you only have to buy once and are good forever.

So if you can't get on board with Seahawks ones consider that option.

Rare car, take care of it and it will be worth a lot in another 20 years.

Yeah, I have only had it on one car, a 66 Malibu that read "GUZLIN" and that was 20 years ago.. Wow.. 20 years ago. I hear you on the Pitbull thing. Was thinking that now was the time to do it if I was going to do it.

The Outfield wrote:'87 Buck GN... that's a sweet car!

By the way, have you used this tool to check if the license plate is even available? https://fortress.wa.gov/dol/dolprod/vsdpersonalplate/

It seems like some you listed aren't available.

    I personally vote for RICEATR

I knew that tool was there! Thanks! And RICEATR is available. I looked into the Collector plate rules, the car is 26 years old, so in 4 years I can get it as the line is 30 years. It would have been nice not to pay for tabs ever again on the car, especially if it isn't used much at all.

4 more days! I am getting psych'd If this car had a twin, it is my Dad's. Basically means same wheels and dark windows when you are talking about the Grand National.

  • Here's a pic of my first 1.
Way over 50k miles and paid way to much.
The deal I scored on my second 1 a unmolested 1 owner WE4 was sweet enough to get over the first 1.
This was in late 90's early 2000's I won best 70 & later GM.

SWEET!! I will be using you for info, no doubt! LOL

I just got mine yesterday. Needs some TLC, paint fading on the hood/trunk, headline drooping on the passenger side. Doh!!!

Car is ridiculous.. No tabs so I can't drive it far, but the little I did was almost hilarious.

Here she is on the ride home.

So you have owned TWO of them? Other than my Dad's, I have seen maybe a total of 3 GN's on the road, seen them at a car show here and there and have seen plenty of Turbo-T's. they are just really rare.

That is a really nice ride. Gotta love the trophy.

I pulled out on the main HWY from my Dad's place in Hermiston, OR and got about a quarter mile before two guys in a pickup were offering 15k for the car on the spot. On the way home there were people giving me the "Thumbs Up" all day. I didn't realize that many people knew what it was. It is far from perfect and certainly not as nice as yours in the picture.

Very special time for my dad and I for sure. I have been wanting to get my hands on it since the first time I saw it over 20 years ago.
