Why does it have to be on CBS,
it will be cut up to nothing, commercial TV always ruins Stephen King stories.

I've seen plenty of works by King ruined without the helping hands of commercial television. I will watch as I always do, but I hadn't yet read this one. I have it on my kindle, and will have it read before it's aired this summer, so please anyone posting here, don't forget to warn for spoiler alerts....thanks

How's the book? I'd rather read it than watch it.

The book is damned good. I really liked it. Also, I'm not a blind Stephen King fan. I did not like Lisey's Story or The Tommyknockers.

Unfortunately, this will probably suck simply because it's public television. Bleh. Give me Showtime or HBO making it, and I'd be thrilled. I'll still check this out regardless, though; and I'm guessing CBS is banking on that...

I never read Lisey's Story, but I did enjoy the Tommyknockers book, but it has to be, by far, the WORST thing they've ever produced from book to any type of video for King and that's saying something.

This thread did remind me to start reading this one, so I pulled out the kindle at lunch and have started it. It's so long though, even during an hour lunch, I am still meandering through the opening sequences

Yeah, Under the Dome is one of his longer ones; definitely.

With a few exceptions, King's works do not translate well to the screen. I just started reading Lisey's story and it reads like he wrote it in a hurry.

Under The Dome is interesting. Heavy handed with its moral compass, but very interesting.

Random thought: I would kill for a high-budget remake of Salem's Lot. The one made in 1979 or whenever it was is horrible. Fantastic book, and I think it could be made incredibly epic on the big screen.

Given the current hard on society has for vampires, I wouldn't be surprised if that did happen. In the hands of the right filmmaker, it would be outstanding.

I was thinking about picking this up (used of course) I was ranting one day about building a dome over Alaska (my home to be) and watching the world burn.......

Well, with 35 movie adaptations, it's easy to have a number of clunkers, but he's put out some great stories that translated to solid movies:

Several outstanding movies among those solid stories. I'd say he's done better than most people think.

I wasn't that big of a fan of The Shining. It deviated way too much. Creepshow, The Green Mile, and The Shawshank Redemption are probably his best 3 works. In reverse order starting with the best.

Riding The Bullet was one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Shawshank is of course, is epic.

I enjoy the Shining, but I think its completely separate than the book, as Kubrick saw something else entirely out of that story.

Of course, I wait, patiently, to see the ka-tet on the big screen. One day my dream will come.

I'd like to see them make a movie about 11/22/63 as well.

Maximum Overdrive is one of my all time favorites. King did the screenplay and directed it.

I actually liked Maximum Overdrive quite a bit, too. I thought I was the only one. Like, in existence.

I always forget that Shawshank and The Green Mile are Kings works. I have loved most of his stuff. The Tommyknockers was awful on TV.

One of my favorites for pure shock value was The Mist... that movie will haunt me forever.

I still don't know if I liked the movie ending better than the novella ending, or not. The Mist was a good movie for sure, but I wish it had been done with a higher budget; Darabont did it on the cheap.

"Dolores Clairbourne" translated very well from print to screen.
I don't think that this will be considered a spoiler: After the first 3 pages, "Under the Dome" is a million pages of "cluster-mug". But,

I didn't HATE the movie version, but I certainly wish I'd seen it BEFORE reading it. If I'd not read it first, I may have liked the movie version more than I do. I kind of classify it as one of his mediocre translations.

Shawshank is number one on my list of his, followed closely by The Green Mile.

I've seen and enjoyed most on Sailor's list. Carrie (the original, still haven't seen anything thereafter) was my introduction to King when I was young.

As far as creepshow goes, I still haven't seen it yet. One of the few of his I seem to keep missing out on I guess. Should try to rectify that soon.

As for the original topic, Under the Dome, I'm about 125 pages into the book, and it's just not grabbing me like I hoped. It is so long though (almost 900 pages) that perhaps it just doesn't really take off quite as fast. So far I'm only mildly entertained with it, but will keep trodding through and hope it improves.
