Ron Burgundy: Mmm. San Diego. Drink it in, it always goes down smooth. Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diago, which of course in German means "a whale's vagina".
Veronica Corningstone: No, there's no way that's correct.
Ron Burgundy: I'm sorry, I was trying to impress you. I don't know what it means. I'll be honest, I don't think anyone knows what it means anymore. Scholars maintain that the translation was lost hundreds of years ago.
Veronica Corningstone: Doesn't it mean "Saint Diego"?
Ron Burgundy: No. No.
Veronica Corningstone: No, that's--that's what it means. Really.
Ron Burgundy: Well. Agree to disagree

After my house arrest, San Diego is where I took my daughter. Beautiful town, just amazing. Yes, its rubey, but the Zoo is amazing. Its pretty cool.
Love the town, love it. Even when I had to do rehab in 2009, I flew myself down to a swanky one in San Diego.
Say hi to Whitehurst.

You're going to need a car, but go to the Pizza Port Ocean Beach or Pizza Port Carlsbad. Great pizza and beer.
If you're going to the Stone brewery, the tour is a lot of fun, but I don't really suggest the restaurant. Pricey and the food wasn't really that good, IMO. Get a beer and walk around the beer garden, though.

Oh, and for the zoo, I bought a pass at the town center, not there. And, I spent 4 hours a day, for 2 days, and only saw maybe 1/4 of it. It's massive.
You should hit a game at Petco Park too? Who knows, maybe the NEW murders row, the Mariners will be there? Not sure when IL play starts. For whatever reason MLB is forcing the Padres to be our sister/NL rival franchise.

It's because both are west coast teams that put together poor hitting teams in pitcher's parks, i.e. teams that suck and no one wants to watch.

I choose to not look at it that way, Sarlacc. How dare you!
IMO, MLB's showcasing the two franchises best equipped to take over the Yankees, Lakers, Cowboys as one of "America's Team". We'll know if it works if that front-runner Absolut latches on to either squad.

The Zoo is awesome, but so is the Safari Park that is a bit away from the city. I would suggest doing the cheetah run and encounter. It's a very cool experience. If they have the new Tiger exhibit done, please come back here and rave about it if you do go. Sea World is also quite nice. Old Town San Diego is good for a days worth of walking and shopping if your significant other is into that thing. There are dozens of very good restaurants in San Diego proper, but downtown jacks up their prices more than any other downtown I have ever been too. Don't know how old you are Zeb, but if you are in the college age range partying in the SDSU area is insane and worth the time. It is true what they say about the girls of SDSU.

Gas Lamp district is cool as well.
Torrey Pines state beach also cool.
Hopping over the gigantic bridge to Coronado is an experience.
Yes, avoid the food at Stone, but as was mentioned, go outside to the beer garden.

I'll be bookmarking this thread...next time we head down to Disneyland we're planning on hitting up some of the stuff in San Diego. I'll have to do some research on their Zoo / SeaWorld. Might have to rethink timeframes if they are not one-day events.

Thanks guys! I've got a few folks down there so I don't think getting around is going to be too much of an issue. Doubt I'll have much time to check out all this cool stuff, really only gonna be there for a couple of days. Definitely looking forward to the food & ale! And hopefully some nice weather.

Was down there in Anaheim for Disneyland in August and drove down to San Diego for a day for the zoo. We saw every animal in the place. We took the bus tour thinking that would be the best way to see everything but I wouldnt recommend it. We finished the bus tour and just walked the whole zoo anyway because you get better views and experience. Its a lot of walking and you should get there as close to opening as possible, but you can definatly do it in a day. This was with a 5 year old and a 7 year old and they both loved it. Sea World is also very doable in a day. We didnt go there this last trip but been there several times and have been able to see all the shows, do all the rides and see all the exhibits on a 1 day trip.

I tried google but couldn't find it. It is on Yelp though. It's va bar called The Door. Its downtown and it's awesome. You go in the bar and find what looks like a wall of kegs. Push on the right side of the keg wall and you end up in an old school speak easy. Just let the bartenders do their thing. Best bar I've ever been to. Bath tub gin in Seattle is a distant second.

I'm sure you know about it already, but you can get a South California pass that gets you passes to Sea World/Disney/SD Zoo.

Sea World, the zoo, etc., are all very good places to visit. Pricey, though, and an all-day affair each if you really want to get your money's worth.
Areas that I'd recommend are the Gaslamp District downtown, and Old Town. Lots of cool (if a bit touristy) places to see. Great restaurants, bars, etc.
