That warm, happy universe that Trek portrays will never happen, and it's arrogance to think otherwise. But at least these shows tried to be about something. TNG had a lot of great episodes that managed to explore the human condition without being preachy. They tried to think. Yeah, X, IX, V, they all sucked, but they tried to say something. Identity and destiny in "Nemesis", conscience and integrity in "Insurrection", the search for God in "V"...big ideas, if perhaps badly executed.
Being a Trek fan who saw the pilot episode when it first aired as a little kid, I can forgive you for missing the premise behind the "warm, happy universe". The premise is that once we take to the stars, all the resources of the universe become available for dirt cheap. Gold? Common. Food? You've seen the replicators. The point being, without life suddenly being a zero sum game and with the ability to relieve over population by colonization, the factors that inevitably lead to mans cruelty to man have been eliminated for the most part. So yes, this was envisioned as an idealist utopia.

I know the idea quite well, thanks. It was scattered all through the franchise.
Your argument relies on the idea that justifies humanism in the first place, that our flaws are generated by the conflicting need for material. I reject that theory.

I'm a Star Wars nerd, but you "EU is canon" nerds blow me out of the water. Is there gonna be World War III if the new movie doesn't even keep Leia's twins names (or what if she only has one kid)?

Hey, if you didn't get mad when there was no Ant Man in the Avengers movie, than this shouldn't even register on the nerd richter scale. As long as lightsabers still make that cool "wroom wroom" noise and there's no Jar Jar Binkses, I'll be totally geeked to go watch another Star Wars movie. Hopefully it'll be out right around the time my oldest kid is old enough to "get it".

As in people that are alive who should be dead, or vice versa.

I'd actually be pissed if they changed the twins names. Unless they were awesome names like Ralnar and Thornak or something.

Jesus and Banjo would be awesome names for the twins. And no Jar-Jar Binks would be a major change. For the better.
