So garbage can lid = instrument but computer =/= instrument?

And your geek squad example is absolutely silly. For one, I could take the tower and bang it against the monitor to make music, just like you can do with a garbage can lid. So, by your own example, a computer is indeed an instrument.

Again, you've decided to ignore the fact that computers can be transformed into powerful synthesizers (which you can play live, meeting your "must be played live" criteria), simply by the addition of a MIDI controller and a good software suite like FL Studio.

As far as your geek squad analogy is concerned, what a crock. Cut the strings off your bass (akin to removing the music software from a PC) and tell me how well she plays.

Prior to the 60s, the I-IV-V progression was only a staple of blues and country music. It began to creep in during the bubblegum era of the 50s, and became the mainstay in the 60s. So yes, the ubiquitous blues progression has been around since the 1920s or thereabouts, but it did not permeate the entire music industry until the 60s or so.

So without strings, you can still play music on your bass?

What does computer memory have to do with anything? Just because you aren't recording yourself at a given moment doesn't mean you aren't creating music?

Ah, so your series of components carefully assembled to facilitate the making of music is an instrument, but somebody else's isn't because it doesn't fit the "ways" that you're stuck in. Got it. Carry on then.

you see we're not communicating...i agree with your post.

if you are recording the music yourself then yes you're a musician.. if your taking someone elses recorded tracks and using them to create a body of music for yourself, you are not.. you composed the body of music, you didn't create it the actual notes and chords....

Whew, sorry I just am passionate about actually playing. I respect all forms of artistry even though I do not care for some of it.

Thank you, and good night, please tip your waitress.

Ummmm...satch didn't teach Vai.

Steve Vai started out transcribing all of Frank Zappa's guitar solos when he was 17 years old. He sent them to Frank and Frank was amazed, so he brought him in and was puzzled that it was an 18 year old kid who'd done all of this. Frank hired him initially as a transcriptionist, but soon found out that Vai was a guitar virtuoso and brought him into the band. On albums featuring Vai, Frank credits him with 'impossible guitar parts'. This was well before Vai and Satriani ever collaborated.

Here is Buckethead playing in Praxis (one of his 1,000,000 bands) with a DJ on some real live turntables (playing them as an instrument)
So apparently Buckethead thinks DJs are musicians...

wow, this thread turned wired in a couple of days.. To me, I guess its is how you want to look at as an artist and a musician. Grand Master Flash is a musician. DJ Pauly D is an artist. Not putting down rap or techno, but hand a ti-85 and pro tools to a thousand and you will get hundreds that sound just alike. Hand over a 59 Les Paul and a Marshal JCM and nobody sounds like Jimmy Page. You really can't argue that, IMO. Its not the sound it makes, its the sound you make with it.

You wanT unf! unf! unf!...booooooooooooop,POP, dada, dada, dada,..dattt BOOOM!!! all night? Thats great, give me some mdma and i have an 85% chance of hitting that on the first or second try. Its not the same as nailin down 46x2 or YYZ

again IMO

Do I have the talent of others here ? hell no. But can I walk into a club and work an Imac and drum machine and have you all shaking buttocks? yep. done that. Can I walk on stage and play "wish you were here" without messing up the solo..doubtful. Artist and Musician..there is a difference.

You are talking Puff Daddy's vs. Page's "Kashmir" are we really gonna argue who is the musician here??

MIKE PATTON! Now THERE is a musician! (Also in 1,000,000 bands, one of which is a hip hop group, Lovage, with one of my favorite producers, The Automator, and a killer vocalist, Cat Power)
