Quote: For a few weeks in February, if the water is flowing in Horsetail Fall, photographers and park visitors gather in the waning evening light for an amazing natural display. The 'natural firefall' appears when the angle of the setting sun sets the waterfall ablaze with reds and oranges, like a fire was falling down the cliffs on the shoulder of El Capitan.
------
The ‘firefall’ is typically the most stunning during middle to late February. However, the natural firefall effect depends on conditions for the year, and photographers may be luckier before or after that time frame depending on the amount of water flow in Horsetail Fall, and the cloud cover. Whats crazy is I just read up on that the other day, albeit another waterfalls place, but it was fascinating as hell.

I am fortunate to be a three hour drive from the park. The place is spectacular and huge. I have been over thirty times now and have repeated only three trails, all of which were worth doing again.

Though amazing, that picture doesn't do El Capitan justice in terms of it size (not many pictures do) That rock face is massive!
I think a small number of people per year are allowed to scale it, too, which if you've been to Yosemite you know is an incredible feat.

Soooo, when I was a kid, they had a real firefall at Yosemite. At midnight they would send a raft lighted on fire over the falls. Pretty awesome and intense to watch. Outlawed nowadays.
