Actually I'd vote to retire that number, just because it was the first.
Fairly significant if you ask me.
48 not 3, three still has a few miles to go before retirement.

So a buddy of mine from college runs these baseball tournaments, and as an ex-collegiate/semi-pro player and lover of the game, I help him out (the kids are like 13-16).

If there's one thing that I would do as a coach for these kids is to tell them to keep their weight back. I was out at a tournament a few weeks ago and consistently these kids were lunging at pitches, swinging all arms, topping the ball for weak little grounders.

Stay back, get that front foot down and get that action going and transfer your weight from back, through the ball, to front.

If you can teach kids that, they will be set for awhile.

  • that's actually what I focus on as well. Keeping the weight back helps fix numerous problems without getting them overthinking about a million different things. With the 10 year olds if you tell them too much their heads are all over the place and they just can't process it well enough to implement it.

    Ha, so true.

In high school I coached a 1st grade team and it was literally the hardest thing to do because I wanted to actually teach them things. There were a few kids who listened, but most of them wanted to do anything but try and learn.

If I wasn't playing at the same time as them I would have continued coaching them forever.
