I don't know about that...there were quite a few great albums this year in rap...but damn, I am enjoying the crap out of Camp. I love the beat on Heartbreak.

That said, Freaks and Geeks is STILL my favorite song of his, that track is just dope.

  • J.Coles album is probably in the running for the best. Drakes album was wayyyyyyyyyy too feminine for me (Thank Me Later was better IMO but hits mixtapes were some of Drakes best stuff), the singing and girly songs are cool for like 4 tracks, but if you're a rapper (unless you're LL) shouldn't be doing that haha.

Does anyone here listen to Freddie Gibbs or Big Krit?

Exactly. He's one of the best rappers as far as skills go, diction and cadence are second to none. Subject matter and the music he makes, however, are definitely for a specific audience.

I recorded him once. Super cool dude, very respectful and professional, but you won't catch me really bumping his sh*t too often. Just can't really get into it.

  • I love this thread, and im bored so i'll post a few songs that probably have been my favorites for awhile that some might not of ever heard.

The beat on this song IMO is ridiculous, I love production like this. Love the style, Tragedy Khadafi is very very and severly under rated as an MC, even in the underground, Same goes for Cormega.

More from two of the best from Queens Bridge

    RIP

The Gemini guy doesn't rap anymore, actually became a Gospel singer. But he has a few mixtapes out, those were all pretty good.

Man.. The Roots... Top 5 favorite hip hop group of mine, probably 4th behind Mobb Deep, Outkast, and Goodie Mob.

Did anyone know Black Thought actually ran for a political office? i forgot what he ran for, it was some small time district thing I don't know if he won but I always thought that was cool as hell.

Where does everyone go for new music though? I go to FreeOnSmash and TheSermonsDomain (something is very obvious about the dude/dudes who run that site, they're from Seattle) and Areyouinthatmoodyet.

"scream" was produced by Kuddie Fresh. He used to be part of the CoOP Prouduction team with this cat named Tryfe. Tryfe is definetly one of the coolest dudes i've met in me trying to get my ishbop together doing beats, he really taught me and my partner in crime A LOT, even let us sit in on sessions when the artist was cool with it. I don't listen to much rap anymore, but if you appreciate lyrical skill then you'd like this group. They're pretty much the only thing new I listen to. Even though I am kind of excited to hear Planet Asia's new CD. Slaughterhouse has artists from different parts of the country but it's amazing that they all complement each other nicely on their songs. Check out "Microphone" if you haven't heard it. I'll try to link them but I've never linked before on here so I'm not sure if it'll work. Also try "Sound Off".

I agree with this assessment of Tech 9ine. He is not fit for mass consumption however the guy can flow like none other. He's a very skilled musician, as well.

That said, I've found myself listening to Mos Def a bit lately. Very cerebral. This collaborative track he did with Massive Attack is the cut.

Their records are really the gold standard for modern hip-hop, in my opinion. I'm really hoping they produce a new record this year as the rumor mill has been indicating. It's hard to classify them as hip-hop/rap, though, when their style spans over several genres from pop rock to pure Southern hip-hop to soul, to jazz.

  • Cool thread. Maybe it can save my dying love for hip-hop. Most of my favorite emcees are in their 40's now, and I can't say I've cared for too many recent artists probably going all the way back to when Kanye came onto the scene.

I'm sorry, but Tech None and Lil Wayne are pretty awful. Drake had potential but went Ja Rule on us. Made one love song and never stopped. Most of the underground stuff nowadays is corny. I'm having a hard time surviving out here. Watch the Throne was extremely disappointing. Just no juice on it.

  • ^^agree with most of what you said. However, I agree with most on this thread that tech 9, fundamentally is very good. His stuff just isn't for me. All the other new faces of hip hop I really don't care for.

  • Tell me this doesn't remind you of some old Nas. Good new hip hop's rare IMO, but it's out there.
