Tuskegee Airman Dies at 99

  • God bless each and every one, only a few left.

A handful of years back I was at our Seattle Museum of Flight looking at the Tuskegee Airmen exhibit and on my way out I noticed a African American gentleman sitting on a nearby bench with a Tuskegee Airman hat on. At the time I just assumed he was a fellow aviation fan, honoring the Tuskegee Airmen. It wasn't until one year I was looking at a reunion photo of the surviving members and I recognized one of them as the man sitting on that bench.

It haunts me to this day that I didn't think to ask him if he was one. I would have given anything to shake the man's hand and listen to anything he wanted to share with me.

Amen brother. The sacrifices, the humility is unseen in new generations. Brokaw was right when he opined "The Greatest Generation". They were a special breed. Self sacrifice, humility, honor, reverence. They will all be missed and should never be forgotten.

  • Not only did they have to endure grave injustice from their own peers and society at the time but to become capable fighter pilots and then THRIVE to become some of the best fighter pilots in the entire war?

    No words.

So true having to fight all the Social injustice yet still come forward and accel at something like this when many of your so called peers were looking down on you not to mention injustices by Ranking officers because of the Social issues.

They were indeed the Greatest Generation, some exceeding that label such as these men.

  • And let's not forget we had a Tuskegee Airman in our own midst for many years. An usher who I am certain most would have never known who he really was. George Hickman who actually raised the 12 flag.
