LOL, it's a retirement state but almost everyone there was 20s or 30s. It was Friday at 3:05pm, I'm not sure there was even one old fart in the place. I'm also not far from ASU, by the way.

Also, that's "you're", gramps. Now go back to your small town in the middle of nowhere, where the town grocer greets you by name and your ego remains assuaged.

  • The theater I was in was all over the place, cheering and yelling on exciting parts, at least 4 people sniffling and such on 2 occasions at least. My kids sat, jumped, cheered, cried, all of the emotions.

    SPOILER!!!!!!!

My little boy loved when Cap grabbed the hammer. Holly crap I thought he was going to fall onto the folks in front of us. My daughter was so excited to see all the super hero girls fighting as one.

This generation I think was able to be able to see on the big screen one of the most complete movie sagas ever. I cant think of any on going films that wove such a story with some many different characters and made them all complete.

I liked Endgame, not as much as Infinity War, but I thought it was a really good ending to the saga. Stark calling Thor "Lebowski" was hilarious.

Need to have a hread that says spoiler free, those that don't want to read the spoilers should not open the thread that says spoilers on it or possible spoilers.

Otherwise whats the point of a thread if you can't discuss the movie?

  • Just watched a second time this afternoon, surprisingly, still had an impact on me! I really enjoyed it a lot the second time too.

I especially enjoyed Cap Marvel was barely in it. :D (If she's the future of the MCU.... lord help us)

The fat Thor was great, seemed liked the funny version of Thor from Ragnarok was continued. Is he going to be in the next Guardians movie? Or I mean Asguardians of the Galaxy?

Scarlett was fantastic, RDJ was fantastic. But did Evans steal the movie? God I'm gonna miss the original Avengers cast.

And how epic was that final battle? Just amazing. My audience was pretty tame both showings, but the one scene that got a response out of the crowd? Cap and Mjolnir. Wow, talk about getting a reaction, people cheered and clapped! So much fun.

And strangely the first showing, was quiet with the main death at the end, but a lot of crying and sniffling the second showing. Did anyone wonder who the lone young man was at the funeral? I had to look it up after.

I figured out who it was after a second. Moving gesture by the filmmakers to bring him in, even if he didn't get a line. Lesser franchises wouldn't have bothered, or even remembered.

Heck, that one long tracking shot probably had more A-list star power than any shot in Hollywood history. Astonishing how much money there was in that one take. Some of them didn't have lines, either. It's nice that that's how the franchise chooses to spend their money. They love the material, and they love the fans.

Watch that shot and you realize that there wasn't a wasted film in the franchise. Everything contributed to this. That shot was a victory lap for the studio, and well deserved.

  • Here's a crazy fact: Avengers: Endgame is the first film that is not named Star Wars or directed by either Steven Spielberg or James Cameron to sell 80,000,000 tickets domestically in a single release since both The Exorcist and The Sting released in the final week of 1973.

In case you're wondering, here's all the movies since 1974 that sold at least 80 million tickets in a single run:

    Jaws (1975)
    Star Wars (1977)
    E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
    Return of the Jedi (1983)
    Jurassic Park (1993)
    Titanic (1997)
Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
    Avatar (2009)
Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

  • Finally saw it while trying to avoid spoilers best I could, had a couple moments ruined by scrolling through social media unfortunately. Also just by knowing certain characters were kind of done with Marvel had me expecting the finale.

Excellent movie, have to agree with others that Infinity War was better. I just never felt concerned and thought the villains overall were quite neutered, though I guess the point is a triumphant end for this phase of the heroes/studio. The first 30 minutes were well done but certainly dragged on a bit long before the various heists. Heists were great, some funny moments and call backs. Dr. Strange portal scene was about as epic as you can get for a movie.

So going forward - Spiderman has to be taking over Iron Man's spot in the team I'd assume. Lot of passing the torch moments and he's a fan favorite.

Thor joining Guardians of the Galaxy v3? Him and Chris Pratt play off each other very well, I think getting them to expand the universe will be great. Lot of characters to introduce through Thor in the comics - Adam Warlock is a given.

Doubt there will be much for planet ending villains for most of phase 4. Have to assume they'll be doing a soft reset and grow the cosmic side for a bit. Maybe some hints of growing threats.

Hope Dr. Doom makes an appearance soon and they do his character justice.

Still don't know how they'll properly use Captain Marvel. Her being able to just torch through enormous ships really cancels out any tension, at all, of upcoming baddies.

Yea, what always boggles my mind though, is that Gone With the Wind sold nearly 200 million tickets domestically when the population of the United States was only 130 million people.

    Think about that.

That would be the same as Avengers or Star Wars selling 500 million tickets in the US over the next year...

The thing you have to remember, is A: tickets were much cheaper back then, and B: there was no such thing as home video, and films were brought out and re-released in theaters pretty regularly. Television slowed this practice, but it didn't really die until VHS became the industry standard in the 1980's. 200,000,000 tickets weren't sold all in 1939, it was re-released regularly into theaters until at least the 50's. There is no solid box office documentation until the 70's, so before that, the numbers aren't split amongst listed re-releases. Therefore, it's far more likely Gone With the Wind probably sold around 100,000,000 and 140,000,000 in it's original release, still quite impressive, but much more on par with later massive blockbusters like The Sound of Music, Star Wars, and Titanic

Look up how many years Gone With the Wind was in most theaters; also, in many theaters it was the only film playing, for MULTIPLE years, due to many being single-screen places. Gone With the Wind came out near the end of 1939, and MGM withdrew it from theaters at the end of 1943.

Films from that era cannot be compared to modern cinema from the past like, five or six decades. Too many differences.

Imagine if Avengers: Endgame was still playing in theaters FOUR YEARS FROM NOW before finally being retired, lol.

Similarly, Endgame must be taken with a grain of salt. They made nearly two dozen films to lead up to this one. People have used the first film's success to justify a SEQUEL film's success before; so, we also have to put a somewhat large asterisk next to Endgame when it comes to viewership and money made.

I'm not trying to crap on Endgame, I enjoyed it and it was fun; but we can't look at this topic in a bubble.

Seriously about Gone With the Wind, though. That'd be like The Force Awakens still being in theaters right now, and not being pulled until this December. We can't even contemplate a film run like that, frankly. Titanic is the longest modern film run and it was in theaters for a year.

  • Avengers: Endgame crossed $800 million domestically yesterday, becoming only the second film to ever reach the plateau, after Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It also sits at $2.687 billion worldwide, which puts it just $101 million shy of Avatar's record. It won't pass TFA domestically, or Avatar internationally (it sits about $140 million behind Avatar's overseas gross of $2.027 billion), but it has a slim outside shot at breaking the overall record. Obviously, inflation means it's not even close to direct equivalency, but that doesn't tarnish the astounding run Endgame has had. It will become only the 19th movie to ever sell over 90 million tickets domestically, and only the 13th to ever do it in a single release (the others are Gone With the Wind, Star Wars, The Sound of Music, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Titanic, The Ten Commandments, Jaws, Doctor Zhivago, The Exorcist, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Ben-Hur, and Avatar), and only the third to do it in the last 20 years after TFA and Avatar.

  • Doers it really matter it was a good Movie with a shitload of pre investment with every movie leading up to it. It had better succeeded. Can you imagine the Lord of the Rings having the first two be great and Jackson not doing the third but them allowing Weeden or some other director to do it and change up the character personality like making the Orcs more Human looking and their dialogue more common tongue. It would get viewers but bomb quickly.

It would get viewers but bomb quickly.
Or Changing Aragorn to a female?

Hell, look at Justice League. It had 4 movies before it, only one less than The Avengers, and did 1/3 the business because nobody liked what Zack Snyder was doing, and Joss Whedon's style put the film's tone in constant war with itself. The big team-up film was the worst performing film in the DCEU. It made less than either Man of Steel or Suicide Squad.

DC badly butchered things and tried to square peg in a round hole in my opinion. Marvel on the other hand has a formula they have pretty much stuck too.
DC continuity sucked and they rushed Justice league before ferreting out some depth.

Then you missed the point. They played it for laughs up until the planning session, but everything else after they start time time traveling isn't played as a joke (outside of Rhodie's cheese whiz crack ), it's designed to show you that Thor has been broken by the events of Infinity War. He lost the last of his family, he lost his homeworld, he lost his most trusted ally in Heimdall, half his people were slaughtered by Thanos, and to top it all off, his desire to rub in his defeat of Thanos allowed Thanos to complete his plan, making Thor, arguably correctly, blame himself entirely for the snap. He's completely lost his confidence. You'll notice Thor's attitude changes drastically after he speaks with his mother, which is what sparks him to be able to take on Thanos along side Cap and Tony during the finale.

Fine... i think everyone understood the premise. But then the jokes at the expense of their depressed, alcoholic friend (his mother's last words to her son given the hint she was going to die were "eat a salad") were... misplaced?

I don't look too deeply for emotional challenges in these movies, and I don't think their attempts to show a literal Gods depression were with the same motives many moviegoers have inferred.

There was a lot to leave unquestioned to make this movie enjoyable. In doing so... it was enjoyable.

  • Lol, it only took a 20-film lead-up to BARELY pass it, a decade later. Avatar 2 will smoke it.

Avatar had two things in it's favor that Avatar 2 will not. One, 3D was a huge selling point on the first film, and I don't think the fervor will be as big on the second, as 3D on the whole has been largely passed on by the general public, and two, Avatar had massive buildup for a decade plus as Cameron's follow up to Titanic. But when Avatar came out, Titanic was still regarded as a great film that held up. Avatar was no where near as well regarded. Most people appreciated the spectacle, but as a film, it was easily Cameron's weakest. I couldn't name a character in the film, and for a movie that made that much money, it has left ZERO pop culture footprint. Do I expect it to do well? Sure. But if it makes more than $700 domestically, I'll be shocked.

  • Underestimate the power of a James Cameron sequel at your peril. :)

Also, Avatar is nowhere near James Cameron's weakest film. Go watch Piranha II.

He disowned that film. His credit is in spite of his wishes.

I know, it's not really his film per se.

I bet you Avatar 2 knocks off Endgame, though.

  • Avatar was an objectively bad film. The plot was just a bunch of retread tropes, the characters were thin and didn’t develop well, and the CG at this point looks dated. All visuals and no substance.

  • Avatar is so douche-chilly. James Cameron deserves to be hung for that shit.
