A good HBO or Showtime Series??

  • My wife scared the Comcast people yesterday and scored us 2 years of free HBO and Showtime. Funny how they magically add stuff and lower your bill when you threaten to leave :2thumbs:

Anyway, just looking for suggestions on good shows on either station that we should check out. I started watching Hard Knocks with the Browns and will likely binge some Real Sports. But if there's any really cool shows we should check out, I would love to hear some suggestions.
We like creepy stuff, drama/intense shows and cop shows quite a bit. Looks like a lot of really cool sports documentaries on both stations too, which I'm a lot more in to.

    Thx

  • Really depends what you have already seen, or if you are looking for more recent shows or not. But if you haven't seen The Wire, I would start there. Dexter is great as well.

  • Ay there's a Throne of Games show or something like that that's pretty big.

I don't know about Showtime shows, but Westworld is a great series. Barry was enjoyable and the second season comes out March 31st. Deadwood was a good Western. Curb Your Enthusiasm, Eastbound and Down, The Wire and Big Little Lies are all highly suggested in the below thread as well.

  • Sopranos
    The Wire
    The Newsroom
How To Make It In America
    Band of Brothers

Of the shows above, I think you would probably like The Newsroom and Band of Brothers.

    Next
    Barry
    Westworld
    6 Feet Under

Of these, I'd bet you like 6 Feet Under.

  • Showtime: Penny Dreadful is really good for 2.5 seasons (creepy)
    Shameless is great comedy/drama
    Billions
Escape at Dannemora is a limited series about the recent prison escape in Dannemora, NY. All directed by Ben Stiller, really well done

HBO: Game of Thrones obviously but it's quite the journey to catch up to the upcoming season
The Wire is a great cop drama but is a bit dated now
    The Leftovers
Silicon Valley and Veep are solid comedy choices
    Westworld

  • Most have been mentioned I think, but for HBO, GoT is awesome of course. And seasons 1 & 3 of True Detective.
Maybe I missed it, but another great series is Deadwood, and now is a good time to watch, because they're coming out with a new series or movie (not sure which).

West World is really good, but I found it somewhat hard to follow (haven't watched 2nd season yet.

Comedy: Eastbound and Down, Curb your Enthusiasm, and Barry. Flight of the Conchords also... weird but funny.

I thought The Young Pope was good, too.

Yeah I got two years, Cinimax, Showtime, HBO. But then again you all think I am a pain in the ass here you should see me when I walk into Comcast with my boxes and say I'm done.

Movie, and it comes out in May.

And all apologies to The Sopranos and The Wire, but IMO Deadwood is the best HBO show behind GOT ever.

  • If I remember correctly Deadwood ended abruptly with a bunch of loose ends, it was popular when it ran and many were surprised it was stopped where it was.

These were literally the two I came in here to post. Both are two of my top five all-time shows.

I'd also add Entourage and Californication to the list.

Seasons 1, 2, and 4 of Dexter were AMAZING.

Seasons 3, 5, and 6 ranged from okay to meh.

Seasons 7 and 8 were utter hot garbage.

yeah they kinda did an abrupt series finale after learning that the show wasn't going to be renewed for another full season.

So it came off all disjointed and unsatisfying.......which is why everyone's been asking for another season or movie to give Deadwood the send off it deserves. So REALLY looking forward to the movie.

it was supposed to end with a movie, if I recall, but the main characters couldn't get their schedules in order

    edit... SGT already on it.

on Amazon, the Jon Ryan series was pretty good.

  • Maulbert, no way. Season three was great. Calling seven and eight hot garbage is also over the type. The show's finale meets that criteria, though.

  • Silicon Valley, shown on Crave TV in Canada is quite hilarious. The first episode I wasn't warming to the characters but it picked up soon after.
