  • I recently bought this speaker.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K1 ... UTF8&psc=1

It works, doesn't sound terrible, a bit tinny, was cheap so I was willing to give it a try, but I'd like to get something better for music. This is for the car and when outside, away from the indoor sound system so portability and battery life are important.

Any knowledgeable audiophiles with suggestions? $75 to $100 is my range, though if there was something cheaper that you recommend that wouldn't hurt my feelings. :)

Gets the same kind of reviews they all get. Looking for someone that bought one and likes what they have. I'm probably going to have to go to a Best Buy and actually listen.

  • The JBL Flip 3 has about the best sound you're going to get out of a couple of 2" speakers and a couple passive radiators.

  • I have a Sony one I got a few years back. It's been all over the world with me and even went on some climbs in the mountains. Pretty decent sound but you have to remember, more bottom end means more power = more battery usage. Mine takes 4 AA's.

  • Replies are much appreciated, but after reading some of the reviews, good and bad, I realize I am really going to have to hear them before forking out more cash.

    Thanks.

  • I have two different ones and I like them both.

The better sounding one it this one that I bought at Costco.
    http://m.costco.com/Bose[emoji768]-SoundLink[emoji768]-Mini-Bluetooth-Speaker.product.100222146.html
    Image
This was the first gen, and it's still available but IIRC there is 2 newer/ more expensive versions.

    I also have this one
    Braven BVR-x

    Image
    https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Wireles ... B00B71FJU2

It has good sound as well but not as good as the Bose.
The plus side of this one over the Bose is, better battery life, up to 12 hours vs 5, it's water proof, and 2 can be linked for "real" stereo sound.
I haven't bought a 2nd one yet but plan on it.
I've actually left it out in the rain before, zero problems.

I got the Bose "on sale" for $139
And don't remember the exact price I paid for the Braven but it was less than what's in the link I posted. I think I paid $149.

Edit: I know that both of these are outside of the budget you posted but I looked/listened to a butt load of portable speakers, even bought a couple of less expensive ones that I just wasn't happy with.
IMHO, the extra money was worth it.

    YMMV

2nd edit: forgot to mention, the Braven will also charge your Phone or MP3 player as it plays the music.
Obviously this reduces the 12 hr play time but I've never listened to it for 12 hrs at a time, and doubt many folks would.

  • I have a Beats Pill and UE Boom.......and I like the Boom better.

    https://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywo ... niq8kgd5_b

The Boom has a deeper fuller sound, and it lasts a good 2-3 hours longer.

So remember to take battery life into account when checking them out.

  • UE Boom is honestly a damn good choice. I've had one for a year and swear by it.

  • I finally made a purchase and so far am very happy with the sound. I bought this:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014M ... UTF8&psc=1

Have only used it a few times, but it has decent sound and gets pretty damn loud. Louder than I usually play music. Yes, I'm an old fart.

I also recently purchased some noise cancelling, ear bud headphones. I had a cheap pair of noise isolating that worked ok, not great, just ok. I originally purchased them for the 2 hours a weekend I spend on the riding mower, which is very loud. The cheap ones we're as good as regular ear plugs at blocking sound and they had some music. Some. If it was a song I didn't know it could be hard to follow. They also didn't like being sent through the washer on my recent trip to New Orleans. So I went for an upgrade and bought these:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00O6 ... UTF8&psc=1

I have never used NC before so have nothing to compare them to other than the cheapies, but I'm very happy with these. I still get a kick out of putting them on, turning on the NC and hearing it go almost quiet. When playing music I can't hear people speaking that are right next to me. I can still hear the mower, but it's easily 50% quieter than the cheap pair and I can hear the music clearly.

  • Good choice with the UE Boom, I love mine......................one downside though is it looks like a bomb, so I've yet to make it through security at the airport without TSA pulling me out of line and checking my carry on. Never happened with any of my other Bluetooth speakers.

I'm going to just stick it in my checked luggage from here on out.
