  • Yes, it certainly did. After losing 3 of 4 to the Twins it would have been great to take 2 of 3 from both the A's and Angels. Hopefully we can do well on the East Coast this week.

Thanks for that. I'm not sure why but I thought we were in the midst of a road trip for some reason.

Yeah, yet there are some fans complaining about it.

    Great move.

  • I think the only reason why he didn't want to come here is because he thought he could get more money from another team and so he waited. He got a bit more money with the Twins, and now he's coming back to Seattle. I think there's a better chance of him re-signing this time.

  • Either way we have another hitter for a relatively low price...and the contract is what we were offering at the start (right?)

We still need another hitter...a better one than Morales

  • They still need another starter and someone that can play center or right at a competent level and can also hit.

Paxton might help with that first one if he comes back strong, but they have to cut a deal for an outfielder. The Rays are going to fix Nick Franklin and make him an All-Star, probably, so we might as well trade him and a bullpen arm or two for Zobrist.

I don't really have faith in this team to make the playoffs, but who knows; they need to reel off a winning streak here soon, though, to give themselves a cushion. It seems like they're headed the other way.

The offense has been nonexistent for a few games now. I believe the stat is that the. Mariner's have scored two or less runs in eleven of the last seventeen games.

Considering who's pitching for the O's today, there should be at least 2 runs scored.

  • The problem isn't Jack Z. How many GMs are they going to receycle through before people understand it's not the GMs that are the problem? Firing Jack Z doesn't solve the problem...the problem lies above Jack Z. Jack Z is not Pat Gillick but he's not Bill Bavasi either. He's just an average GM who has his hands tied with this organization.

Nintendo is a bigger problem, but that doesn't absolve Jack Z. Oakland's ownership is cheap and runs the team on pocket change, but Jack Z does things like blowing most of his budget on a 31-year-old 2B when he doesn't have the money to surround him with actual decent offensive players to take advantage of the back end of his peak and Billy Beane does things like taking a flyer on Yoenis Cespedes for 4/36. Jack Z is still a problem, but yeah, Nintendo needs to sell this team. I'm assuming Lincoln will never get fired if Ninty holds on to the team, so hopefully the WiiU market drops out completely soon.

Howard Lincoln IS the MAJOR problem. This team eroded from a 116 win team to a 100 loss team under his watch.
I'm not Z's biggest fan BUT the minor league cupboard was empty and barren from the Gillick and Bavasi era, so he has had to completely rebuild the Mariners minor league system from scratch. Lincoln and his toadies are the cancer that has been killing this team for over a decade.

No GM compares to Beane and how he gets more for much less, the guy is a small market/small budget genius.

  • M's Offense under the "Jack Z" tenure (copied from seattlecoug on another forum)

    Out of 30 teams
    2009:
    Runs: 28th
    Avg: 22nd

    2010:
    Runs: 30th
    Avg: 30th

    2011:
    Runs: 30th
    Avg: 30th

    2012:
    Runs: 27th
    Avg: 30th

    2013:
    Runs: 22nd
    Avg: 28th

    2014 Runs: 24th
    Avg: 23rd

    OBP:
    2009: 29th
    2010: 30th
    2011: 30th
    2012: 30th
    2013: 26th
    2014: 28th
    (this one is ultra pathetic)

    SLG:
    2009: 23rd
    2010: 30th
    2011: 30th
    2012: 30th
    2013: 20th
    2014: 27th

  • jack z is absolutely part of the problem. Plenty of GM's have won with poor ownership. It isn't like Lincoln is overruling jack on every move he makes.

Z has yet to put together even a competent offense in 6 years, we've had 4 87+ loss seasons and this team is probably no better than 500.

  • I think more than anything, Jack has been really unlucky. He acquired some of the biggest prospects you could get. How can we expect him to produce and take this thing from the ground up when he gets absolutely zero for Smoak, Montero, Ackley and Hultzen. A couple super high prospects and a couple #2 overall picks. If even ONE of those guys panned out, our offense would be exponentially better.

I don't know about "exponentially", but your point is valid as it certainly would make a positive difference on the offense. The other side of the argument though is that he's not unlucky but rather can't spot the right talent. Yeah I know, these guys were rated highly by "everyone" and that supports your argument. Still I have questions about his long range forecasting ability.

  • You know Jack Z reminds me of shaggy in trouble with the curve. He sees this can't miss number one guy. And isn't looking at what he can't do and where to find. Those kids like the hawks do. And that is this mariners problem they have a bunch of kids that can't hit mean while. How is trout doing and many of the young bats that are coming out now. Jack reminds me of that guy that plays his poker game so tight that even when he has the win he is afraid to play it and folds. He isn't a gm he is an average scout.

  • If the M's offered Kyle Seager as a trade piece...would you be upset? I believe the 3rd baseman of the future is DJ Peterson. He is killing it in the minors and maybe be ready next year. He plays 3B. Seager may be an attractive piece for another club. If you were Jack Z, would you trade Kyle Seager?

  • todays game says it all, you can have the best pitching in the world but you have to score runs to win.

with this current group of "hitters" the M's wont be winning much of anything. Pull the trigger, make a move and take a chance. Why not?

Kinda makes no sense to trade your best offensive player in order to improve your offense.

The M's can make plenty of deals if they give up some of their prospects but they seem unwilling to do so.

Worst post of the year. Peterson transitions to 1st and is starting early next season at latest, unless some GM offers the trade of the century for Seager. Why on earth would you get rid of him?

Hell let's throw Felix and and Taylor in for giggles.

Sorry the post didn't measure up to your standards...

    Hmmm....the AL West leading Oakland A's just traded their best hitter/player (arguably) for a rent-a-pitcher - http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/jon-lester-yoenis-cespedes-jonny-gomes-trade-boston-red-sox-oakland-athletics-073114

  • So apparently Morales is the only move Jack Z is going to make, which is really depressing.

  • sounds like they are in the running for Alex Rios AND David Price, of those two who would you rather have?

  • I was upset about the Cespedes trade, and I'm not even an A's fan.

I hope it works out for the A's, though. I want them to win it all this year since the Mariners will be doing jack-all again. Then people can stop using the absurd "If Billy Beane is a genius, how come one of his teams hasn't won the World Series yet?" argument.

    Ben Zobrist.
Colin Kaepernick is a great person, something that the NFL is sorely lacking.

  • Seems like he (Denorfia) will fit right in with the M's - another light-hitting outfielder.

This acquisition is so underwhelming...wow! Waited until deadline day to get this guy...really?

  • Don't worry, I'm sure Jack Z's polishing off a Tai Walker/Nick Franklin/other prospects trade for Giancarlo Stanton right now!

    Oops, sorry, I've been drinking.

By the way, about Nick Franklin: It's a shame that the M's yanking him around this year has probably killed quite a bit of leverage they have in trading him and probably retarded his growth. He hit like garbage when he was up here, but all the reports about GMs being very interested in him, and I'm talking Beane and Friedman specifically, tell me that they see really good stuff that they can get out of him unlike our coaches and org.
