Yeah Fox said the release was "a football decision," but that doesn't make sense with Prater's cap hit next year.

You don't cut a productive player with that kind of cap hit unless there's something else going on.

What's going on is that over the next three years Prater was going to count 10.25 million against the cap, whereas while Prater was gone Brandon McManus has gone 6/6 and over the next two years he'll count 900K against the cap.

If they like McManus, even with the 4 million dollar cap hit next year, over these two years they're still saving 2 million on the cap, and also not on the hook for another 4 million on the cap in '15.

This is purely a cap decision, IMO. They're not going to keep two kickers on the roster, they like McManus and don't want to lose him, and save money in both the short and long term by doing it.

Personal problems aside, Prater is one of the best kickers in the game. If he doesn't get picked up in the next couple weeks I'd assume there are some behind the scenes stuff going on here.

Lions also need a K. Guess Peyton didn't want another Mike Vanderjagt....be funny to watch Donkeys season end on a missed FG.

Have the Saints contacted him yet?

Can he play safety? Seriously, he'd be an upgrade over Shayne Graham. If they haven't, they should.

The Donkos might want to keep Prater's number on speed dial, cause McManus looked shaky as hell yesterday.

This is the guy the Broncos want in tight regular season and playoff games?

From what I've read, it was maybe 70% a cap decision and 30% an off-the-field decision. The cap numbers are clearly in McManus' favor, but the other concern the Broncos had was that Prater had to appeal just to get the suspension down to 4 games (he had a DUI previously in 2011). They were concerned about what could happen if he got popped again in the future. Why pay a guy more against your cap who represents a suspension risk when you have a guy who might be almost as good with little risk and on a cheap deal?
