^^^^ I think the interest could (or maybe should?) come from there being some fool's gold in the stats you're citing.
Yeah, Ellngton is averaging 5.8 YPC...on 12 total carries. After spending all of last year injured it only took him 15 minutes of play to get knocked out again.
And yeah, Johnson is averaging 5.6 YPC...but again, on 12 carries.
What it would basically come down to is that neither of those guys are every down backs whereas Forte is, and would also be a HUUUUUUUGE upgrade over Chris Johnson for a team tha't trying to win now with a relatively short window.
FWIW I also think it's an overstatement to say that after multiple seasons of being CJ1K? now at 30 years old he's back to being CJ2k.
Save for one 30 yard run against the dumpster fire 49ers, he's played three really, really awful defenses (9ers, Bears, and Saints) and averaged 3.7 YPC.
The Cardinals currently have ben averaging 125 yds per game.
The question would be what would be Forte's role and who would he replace?
David Johnson has gotten 3 Td's in his very limited touches. He is very similar to Matt Forte and ultimately is the future of the RB position for the Cardinals. His limited snaps are because Arians said it's Ellington.
Ellington is the #1 RB on the team, yes he got injured on his 12th carry during week 1. However he has shown he can create big plays time and time again.
Chris Johnson last year still got 4.3 YPC on a very limited role. PFF said this about him before the season:
On a per touch basis. however, things look quite different. Johnson’s 2.61 yards after contact (tied for 11th in the league), and average of one missed tackle for every 8.1 touches bear closer resemblance to the first half of his Titans career than the second half of it. That’s good enough to suggest that Johnson still has something to offer the Cardinals or any other team that shows interest in him.
Yes he got a 30yd run on the San Franscio defense but he created that with shiftiness, and great vision.
I just don't see how Forte could come in here and uproot what's already working. His cost wouldn't justify whatever increase in production he might bring. He certainly wont be replacing David Johnson, or Ellington which would mean Chris Johnson would be the odd man out. But Chris Johnson, has shown he can do what we ask of him already.
Our RBs have produced 125 yds rushing a game.
121 Yards rushing
6 Tds
I just don't see any place for him on the roster because you'd be trying to fix something thats not broken.
