Wow, they'll be getting a SERIES of apologies form the NFL office.

Tavon Austin ran back a punt for a TD, which was called back for an illegal block call. Greatest thing? The guy actually never made contact, he whiffed the block. They called illegal block on a player that whiffed the block.

agreed, turn on any random game and within seconds there will be a horrible call, where all the ref had to do was NOT throw a flag. Goodell should shoulder a lot of the blame. this bullshit emphasis on ticky tack calls is killing the integrity of the game.

One of the dotnet MVP's will post the vine of it, but it cost that young team a game. I hate the Rams (mostly because draft nerds and bloggers love the Rams), but I was pissed. The announcers weren't benignly pissed, they we're genuinely disgusted.

Oh, and English and Montana...tough loss. I'm sorry guys, Rams looked good though. Lot of heart.

I've said it before and will say it again.

NFL officials should be FULL TIME NFL employees.
They should Train In the off season.
The NFL has the money to pay officials on a year round basis.

This would not fix ALL of the problems but it would fix the majority of them. IMO

Of course it would. But, that'd mean each ref would have to get a full time salary and benefits and the NFL cant afford that.

When they got hard on concussions, Roger said they would now error on the side of caution with penalties. I feared that attitude would leak into all calls. I think it has done exactly that.

The PI on Maxi to start the game was bullshit too.

Except that in the last round of negotiations (2012), it was the referees who refused to go full-time. They don't want it, but the NFL, to Goodell's partial credit, does. However, he screwed up because of the Tate debacle and conceded to their demands, in spite of the fact it was the right call. So along with what Scotte has already said, we've gotten doubly screwed by NFL refs. They're reffing with impunity because no one wants the replacements back.

When I see a thread titled "The Rams got screwed", Pe. My first thought is... Screw the Rams.

They deserve everything they get for taking advantage of the Skins the way they did. While Snyder was over there fending off equal rights activists, Jeff "white devil" Fisher was concocting a diabolical scheme that would ruin the Skins for the rest of eternity. Same as it ever was...same as it everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr was.

I say to hell with the current officials. Hire full time guys, spend two years training them or however long it takes.
Then fire any of the currents that don't want a full time job.

Edit:
I wonder how many people that with proper training would be fully capable and willing to be a full time NFL official. For say 75-80k a year.

2nd Edit:
Hell throw in the NFL benefit package and that would be a sweet gig. As long as you can handle a high stress environment.

You all got funny...You want them to be paid by the nfl...and then the nfl tells them who is gonna win or lose that week. After all that is where the paycheck comes from. Realistically, an outside source is a better idea. A little bit better situation by a tiny bit different impartial observer...I dont know tho. I only watch sports. LOL

I have no idea what on earth most of that means, but I definitely hate the Rams too. Jeff Fisher teams are just consistently the dirtiest in the business.

I get why the refs wouldn't want to be full time, it made sense to me. Nicely explained in this article:

“I am a full-time official,” Hochuli said (via PFT). “I'm as full-time as the coaches or the players or anybody could be. If they said, ‘Ed, you can't be a lawyer anymore, you can only do this,' there's nothing else that I could do.”

While we don't agree that Hochuli is "as full-time as the coaches" (we're guessing he doesn't spend February-April obsessively preparing for the NFL Draft), we're not convinced he -- or any other officials -- needs to be. The issue isn't that they don't have a command of the rules (something the replacements couldn't say), it's making split-second decisions in enforcing those rules. And no amount of offseason work will change that.

Real-world example: Back in 2008, Hochuli ruled that quarterback Jay Cutler, then with the Broncos, had thrown an incomplete pass when, in fact, replay ruled it a fumble. Instead of possession going to the Chargers, Hochuli's quick whistle blew the play dead and the ball was spotted at San Diego's 10-yard-line. Moments later later, Denver scored, made the 2-point conversion, and eventually won, 39-38.

"Affecting the outcome of a game is a devastating feeling," Hochuli said at the time. "Officials strive for perfection -- I failed miserably. Although it does no good to say it, I am very, very sorry."

So here's the question: Would this have happened if Hochuli had been a "full-time employee"? Almost certainly since, again, this has nothing to do with Hochuli's mastery of the rules but his split-second interpretation of them.
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-foo ... -officials

The refs understand the rules, and if they don't, they shouldn't be qualified to be a ref, period. Making them full time or not shouldn't change that. If it does, then they shouldn't be a ref in the first place because all the refs that are refs now need to understand the rules in their entirety already. Making them full-time shouldn't make them understand the rules better, they should already understand them fully now. Like the article says, "this has nothing to do with [the ref's] mastery of the rules but his split-second interpretation of them." If they're bad at interpreting the rules, they shouldn't be a ref in the first place either.

And, no matter how talented the team is, they end up within one game of 8-8 or worse every year.

NFL claims 149,000 with a raise to 189,000 a year in 2017.

Referees dispute that number and say it was much less, only a 2.3% increase over their current number. So I guess it would be unfair to absolutely state the NFL number, but that was what had stuck in my head.

Yep. Similar happened to general Custer.

it was a weak attempt at humor, MW hawker. My sister did some ancestry.com horseshit and after learning I'm 1/8th (!?) Cherokee, I'm now on the war wagon.

But the other 7/8ths keeps plowing that 1/8th with alcohol and ...well, anyone know where I can buy a cheap casino?

Too bad the union for the officials has fought this vehemently. What happens when the NFL tries to get leverage over them? Everyone bitches about the replacement refs and wants the "real ones" back.

You're shocked that officiating sucks? Hint for you, accept it and go on to the next game.
