Oakland will trade for Seahawks QB Matt Flynn, as @JayGlazer reported. Deal will be for two picks - one this year + a conditional pick in 14

    I hope it's a 2nd rounder this year!!

  • Hoping for a 4th and maybe another 4th next year. I think that would be pretty decent given our FO's acuity in those rounds.

Edit: After seeing the news, kind of sucks we have to wait a year, but ah well.

  • Sucks if it's for two late round picks. He's worth more as a backup. He must have really wanted out and made an issue of it for them to let him go that cheap if it's true, since it puts us at 1 QB on the roster.

  • So the Raiders are trying to get rid of Palmer to AZ for late round picks which in turn will come our way for Flynn? This crap is confusing and I don't like the late round picks for a solid back up QB. Who will be our back up now?

    Completely this.

We're just happy to move that salary, get a young guy in to grow behind Russell. We don't need a really expensive backup, team clearly feels that way.

Well, when you talk about money invested in the position, we've got another couple of years on Russell's current deal, and if we draft a kid to learn behind him, we'll have very little money tied up in the QB position for the next few years at least - a position that most teams are forced to invest heavily in. Dumping Flynn's salary like this gives us MUCH more flexibility, not just this year, but over the next few years. This is a very good move for the seahawks, regardless of what we got in the way of draft picks.

  • This was a move to get the money off the books. The savings this year is only about $2 million but if we kept him this year we would have spent $7.25 million AND had another $4million hit next year if we cut him

The total hit from keeping him for ONE YEAR would be $11.25 million vs trading him now and taking the $4 million hit. The ACTUAL saving by doing this is $7.25 million - that is a lot of money. Then I understand that we will probably sign Colt McCoy / Vince Young / Thigphen so there goes $1 million to $1.5 million in salary but you are still looking at about $5millions in savings or what we are paying Bennet.

Probably a 5th rounder this year and a 6th rounder next year that can turn into a 5th rounder. Remember their pick this year is at the top of the round so that does carry a lot more value. As in if you would be happy with a Baltimore Ravens 4th rounder then an Oakland 5th rounder should make you feel ok as well

  • Doesnt matter what we get it is something we didnt have before. We got Flynn as a possible starter and then insurance. It cost us nothing other than money. Money does not mean a thing in the NFL other than cap and we had space then.

What we get is draft picks we didnt have before. Therefore the whole Flynn thing was a win for us. We paid for insurance and then used that money for 2 draft picks.

If we get a 5th I will be happy. JS will find something good in that spot.

  • Well, we already have like ten picks this year. I would rather have the picks in '14 and '15.

More importantly, that is savings of 4.5 and 8.5M over the next two years, if I read this contract info right. Roll it over; we have guys to pay.

Also, Flynn is going to (finally) win a starting job in Oakland, so that conditional pick should turn out to be an optimal pick for us.

$3.25m saving this year. Also saves us cutting him in a year, he was never seeing $8.25m. We basically gave up one year of Flynn as a backup for some picks plus $3.25m in cap. Can't argue with that IMO.

osprey3263 wrote:next step time to go get Colt McCoy! :D

This leads me to belive the deal was more about giving Flynn a chance to start, more than anything else. I know there's thinking that maybe this frees up money for Kam, but I'm not sure Kam would get more on the open market.

It frees up money period. Doesn't matter where it goes, doesn't matter if we spend it this year as the CAP now rolls over. The whole money thinking has changed with a rolling cap. A dollar saved today is a dollar you can spend tomorrow (on Sherman or RW....)

This was about money and the picks are "bonus"

I think thats because the move was more about Flynn, and maintaining the Hawks rep of doing right by their players, than anything else. It was a freebie year for the Hawks.

Thanks for the correction - but you misrepresented my post. I wasn't arguing against it I was showing how on top of the $3.25 you saved an additional $4 million as I agree with you 100% we would have cut him next year which would have been a $4million cap hit on top of the $7.25 million this year

    The trade was great

They must not have noticed which rookie he couldn't beat.... Wilson would beat out all but 5 or 6 qbs in true competition... And most of them are named Brady or Manning

Looks like AZ is going to get Palmer, which is fine by me. I think he is washed up... they'd be better off running out Stanton.

He is 34, right? I think he is a slight upgrade over Stanton at this point in time, but not that much. This is sort of a perplexing move for the Cards. If they were 8-8 and trying to get two more wins a year to get into playoff range, okay. But right now? They should be trying to find a QB that is still young. Starting Stanton and drafting a guy they like seemed smart to me.

Hey, I said I'd wait for details to emerge on compensation. Now, if there's no extensions because of the Flynntastic savings, I'll KNOW I'm right (at least I'll say that).

And congrats to English! While you didn't harpoon him, sending your white whale to the USFL, has to feel nice.

  • ahhhhh. This trade sucks. I am not buying ramped homeristic arguement. Should have gotten a lousy third round pick for him at least.

We dont need anymore late round picks. McKenzie fleeced us. We were jobbed. Bummer.

I am hopping we dont get any of the current vets. A rookie would be better.

BTW some of you should contact a shrink Tavaris Jackson and Seneca Wallace are two of worst QBs in the NFL.
