Florio speculates Sidney Rice may be released

The Essential Online Seahawks Fan Forum Community. There simply is NO substitute. RATING: PG-13
  • You can't justify the Harvin trade if they cut Rice, which means that guy has no idea what he's talking about. That would mean Seattle essentially gave up a 1st, 7th, 2014 mid-round pick, Leon Washington and Sidney Rice to acquire Percy Harvin. They can't possibly be that stupid.

  • The only way we get rid of Sidney is if we draft a big WR and he outplays Rice either in TC or during the year and he makes Rice expendable

  • Like Missing_Clink said, it's hard to speculate cap ramifications without knowing how much we're paying Harvin, and how it's structured.

I can see us needing to restructure Rice or Miller after next year, but we don't have a ton of FA needing to be signed, lots of our draft picks probably won't make the team, and we're saving a TON of money at certain positions, as has also been mentioned.

If we're paying Harvin what he wants though, then yeah, it's logical speculation. That's just too much money tied up in Harvin, Rice, and Miller.

  • Remember - cap now rolls over so cutting Rice today gives us room under the salary cap NEXT YEAR

I still don't think it happens and agree with DavidSeven then we gave up a first, fourth, seven and Rice for Harvin. There is trade value in Rice (I think :) )

  • I think that Sidney may be asked to restructure his deal but even if he says no, he may be able to survive for this season w/o facing the possibility of being cut.
Until we develop a pass rush that will cause opposing teams to be forced to scheme to defend it we will never be able to completely take the final step. That was done and the final step was taken.

Beat me to it. Florio's a schmuck. What he doesn't seem to care about is they have cap room THIS year. Rice and Miller's deals are much more cap friendly this year. If we're going all in to win now, it would be ridiculous to cut Rice. Look at his numbers with harvin and favre in minnesota.

  • Having 2 small starting receivers would be against the Carroll philosophy on offense. We have no big guy to take Rice's place if released, if he was you'd have to figure they already have another big guy targeted somewhere.

    Here's the quote:

PC: One of our put out transcripts and I was raving about trying to stop him. He gets the ball so many ways and he is such a dangerous runner after the catch. They got it to him in a multitude of ways and one of the great things is that Bevell coached him into the league and respects the hell out of him. We're going to fit him and we have a really nice group with Sidney Rice, Golden Tate and Doug Baldwin. He does have some qualities - he carries the ball out of the backfield like a tailback and

Yep, he was so incensed about the "Fail Mary" that was all he talked about last season, to the point where he's got a post all about "The Impact of the Fail Mary" less than two hours after our 42-13 beatdown of the Niners.

  • If we release Rice, who would be one of our few big receivers that produces, then this trade starts to veer in the the stupid/foolish category.

I don't want this to be like the Vin Baker trade where we get some guy that we feel is a star with just a few problems, but that the cost of keeping means gutting a few players - players that turn out to be important. Any Seattle fans of any sport are probably conditioned to listen for the sound of the other shoe dropping...so maybe this is that.

But getting rid of Rice so that we can have a squadron of 4ft tall receivers does not sound wise.

I am already bothered we lost Leon, this would just grind it in.

  • People talking about cuts in reaction to the Harvin trade don't take into account that trading Flynn and installing a decent backup QB at a backup's salary gives the Hawks a lot of bang for very few bucks at QB...

Makes sense to use a little of the cap space freed up by the QB bargain to give RW the best receiver corps they can get.

  • Tate was asked by Josina Anderson of ESPN, and he said

When asked about the trade, Seahawks receiver Golden Tate, whose spot on the Seahawks' depth chart will be altered with the addition of Harvin, told Josina Anderson that "it's a business."

"The Seahawks are trying to do whatever they think is necessary to put together a Super Bowl quality team. If this is one of the steps they think works to accomplish that, then that's their choice. I don't think it will impact any of our work habits. We are still going to grind and let the cards play out the way that they will," he said.

Doesn't seem too upset and I'm sure everything will be cool with Harvin is scoring points for us. Tate's a Seahawk he will be fine with this.

Sadly, I do. He's getting paid a lot of money for middling production. He's good for stretching the field but his play style makes him an injury risk (he falls down hard after almost every catch), and Golden Tate is establishing himself as the bigger threat. Much as I'd love to see Harvin, Rice, and Golden on the field together, it seems likely that Rice is the odd man out.

'Sadly,' I think this post is over-dramatc and exhibits a narrow-mined view of how the offense evolved as the season progressed. Kinda 'sad' actually. He 'fell' soft enough to stay injury-free all of last season, so yeah, I can see where that's a hugh problem.

Who needs play makers anyhow when we have GT with his single, modestly-productive season. And Sid should have hooked up more often wth RW, cuz it's not like they were only working with 1/3 the reps they would normally get in preseason.

Maybe I should just mind meld with a mediot so I won't have to bore myself with all the details. This has been very enlightning. Thank you much.
