Do you want Giacomini back?
Mon Jan 14, 2013 5:39 pm
  • I know for much of the year, we were fed up with Breno Giacomini. Dumb penalties, mental lapses, drive-killing mistakes. His play seemed to be pretty decent, if not solid, but the other stuff almost wasn't worth it.

But I realized today that he has not caused me frustration for weeks. In fact, I don't recall hearing his name (which in this case is a good thing) for a few games.

Could it be that he figured out how to play smarter football? Turned a corner?

    Or coincidence?

Do you want him back as the starting RT next year, or do you think that is a position that needs to be addressed?

  • All I can think of when I hear his name is that one user's (sorry, can't remember who ya are!) sig with the line about "Eight yards and a pile of bodies." If there's even a hint of that being true, then yeah, I want him. Mean SOBs on the O-line = good running game.

  • No reason not to bring him back, but I would be very happy if we could upgrade to someone who is a more consistent pass blocker. Breno has cut down on the penalties, which is good, but I still see him getting beat all the time. I think he's overrated on here because people like his toughness.

How many times did he get beat by Julius Peppers, Mario Williams, Cameron Wake, Aldon Smith and Jared Allen?

And yes, they lined those guys up against Breno AND Okung.

Furthermore, name me five other starting right tackles in the NFL without using google.

    Breno is just fine.

I'm accepting that challenge of naming 5 starting RT's without google.

Tyson Clabo, Anthony Davis, Jerome Bushrod, Doug Free, Bryan Bulaga, Phil Loadholt, Gabe Carimi, Jonathan Martin, Sebastian Vollmer, Andre Smith, (That rookie on the browns picked in the 2nd round, his name eludes me), and that's about all I got, with a couple added in for good measure.

    Bam.

    EDIT: Mitchell Swartz, damnit.

  • I like Breno as well -- his intensity and that absolute brawler mentality is exactly what you want in a Tackle. I believe that he's a real asset in the run game. That said, I'm a bit torn on him in terms of his ability to pass protect. That last Rams game is the prime example of what I'm talking about. After that game, I went back to the game film and really focused in on the offensive line and where the pressure was coming from. I want to say that 5 of the 6 Sacks were through that right side and that Breno did allow 2 or 3 of those sacks IIRC (one of those was kind of a mutual Breno/Sweezy allowed sack). All day long the Rams were able to get pressure on Wilson through that right side, so I'm a bit concerned honestly. Giacomini was clearly overmatched in that game. The Rams have one of the top young defensive lines in the game ... we've obviously got to play them twice a year ... and that team is only going to get better. So I dunno honestly. If we can upgrade that RT position with a reasonable FA deal without breaking the bank, messing up our cap, and compromising all our other offseason plans (or via a draft choice) -- I'd have to say sure, I'm game. If not, then I guess it's just something we'll have to live with.

  • He has got his head screwed on much better after the benching, I love the fact he won't take crap and will jump into a pit of wolves if asked. Thats the kind of guy you want watching out for a franchise QB, not someone that will walk back to the huddle and watch or do nothing when someone choke holds your QB.

  • Guard is a spot that MUST be upgraded. Ideally, we get a stud to start @ LG and bring competition in @ RG as well. If there's the ability to upgrade or bring in competition for the RT spot as well, I am all for it. I know there are bigger priorities, but when you have such a valuable player in Wilson and rely so heavily on the running game with Beast Mode, why wouldn't you want to protect and improve those two key aspects of our game?

  • I was Breno's biggest critic at the start of the season, and quite frankly, I couldn't stand him.

He made MASSIVE improvement this season. As others have said: He is an absolute enforcer.
He protects and stands up for Russell Wilson. I admire and respect that.

I personally think that if Carpenter comes back healthy our line will be fine.

  • His status shouldn't be in question. Bone-head penalties and playing to the whistle aside, he established himself as a top-10 RT. There I said it.

    He's above-average at run blocking.

    He's average at pass blocking.

In today's NFL, that is a top RT. Being average in this league, at a non-premium position is valuable and adequate.

He and Unger set the tone physically for Beast-Mode and Turbanator to do their thing. I think he's important not only for his play but for his place on this chip-on-the-shoulder, under-valued, under-drafted roster.

GB picked him up as an undrafted FA, who converted to TE in college from defensive end and made him a RT. Sort of like Sweezy's situation. In other words, The Russian will only get better as he gains more experience. His best days are ahead and we should be Thrilled, seriously, with his play and optimistic for improvement.

If he's the same player, or regressing, in 18 months, then we worry about replacing him. I would worry more about both G positions on the OL.

  • I'll admit I was one of his detractors for probably 2/3 of the sesaon. But then like a light switch he cleaned it up significantly the final 1/3. That's measurable improvement! That I'll take. Dudes a brawler but he has shown he knows when to use it now. Surely he will have competition from sweezy and possibly any FA or draft picks they bring in. Wish him well!

Nope. Sorry to disappoint you. In a fit of rage I said that I had never been more ashamed of .NET than I was while watching so many people quit on this team yesterday as they battled back and that (paraphrasing) 'win or lose I will not be back this season.

Why hasn't anybody thought of this before?:

Didn't you say you weren't ever posting here again? :229031_confused2:

Nope. Sorry to disappoint you. In a fit of rage I said that I had never been more ashamed of .NET than I was while watching so many people quit on this team yesterday as they battled back and that (paraphrasing) 'win or lose I will not be back this season.

The season is over. So sue me. Are you tracking all the other stupid shit people said in the gameday forum yesterday?

Not mad, just surprised you came back after such a big melt-down. I wouldn't have if I did that. I guess props to you...

  • Guys lets keep it on topic. If you want to take shots at each other do it in the shack.

  • I love this guy, totally awesome, has the size, height and the attitude that perfectly fits into Tom Cables philosophy. I have no clue why people are even debating about this. Yes, he was new to team and took a while to adjust , which is natural specially with the different schemes. I saw him run over multiple guys and people from opposing team did not want to take him on. That is most of the battle in a line.

  • I hope they keep him for his value, honestly you can't spend money everywhere and this guy at a salary under 2 million is great bang for buck. He only allowed 4 sacks this year, pretty solid for a right tackle.

  • Only if the equipment manager is allowed to fit him for a real helmet instead of the ones you get at am/pm that hold your soft serve.
I enjoy ruining threads by making them about personal attacks and then commenting about how personal attacks make the other person's argument invalid.

  • I say keep him for another year. Would like to see us pick up Ricky Wagner from Wisconsin in Rnd 3 or 4 or maybe even D.J. Fluker in Rnd 2 or 3.
