One move that Pete/John made that backfired

The Essential Online Seahawks Fan Forum Community. There simply is NO substitute. RATING: PG-13
  • These guys have done an incredible job with stocking this team with talent. The one move I and a few others questioned was letting Michael Bennett go a few years back. Dude is a good young pass/run specialist putting up good numbers. We could have used him this year and especially today. Hopefully we can get the pash rush and interior run stop fixed especially the rush. Killed us most of these close losses.

That was Timmah! who blew that, not John or Pete.

This is correct. Lest we all forget the "Kicker of the Future" debacle?

  • Kicker thing was in 08 I think. We even cut Jason Babin to keep the kicker. Bennett and Babin could have been a deadly duo.

  • They should've kept Rob Sims to play LG. Dude isn't All-pro but he's a far cry better than Carp, Sweezy and Moffit IMO.

  • As long as we're piling on the bad moves by Pete and Jo... uh, I mean previous front offices, how does drafting Aaron Curry over Michael Crabtree look right about now.

I really, really wanted Crabtree in that draft. I was bummed we didn't take him when we could have. And now he's blowing things up for a division rival. Yea, that smarts.

I wouldn't go as far as saying "blowing things up". After years of mediocre at best playing, he's finally starting to play like a starter.

I still think Crabtree is over rated, and he's barely done anything in this league yet. Guess time will tell.

  • The only truly horrid move by PC/JS - amongst those that actually cost something - was the Charlie Whitehurst trade. And that's not just hindsight being 20/20 for me, as I thought that was a highly dubious (at best) move at the time that it was made. They've done a great job of building through the draft (which I'm a huge proponent of), and staying appropriately conservative in free agency. And by conservative I don't mean that they haven't made some big ticket signings, they absolutely have. But it's been a select few each year, and for the most part they've been higher-impact guys at positions of need at the time (ex: Sidney Rice, Zach Miller, Jason Jones to a lesser degree, even Matt Flynn in a way). And they've certainly nailed the draft with the only confirmed bad picks being a small handful of mid-round selections (EJ Wilson, Kris Durham, Mark Legree), which they've more than compensated for with what were (or in some cases, appear to be) some superb late-round selections (Chancellor, Sherman, McCoy, M. Smith, Lane, Sweezy, Scruggs) and UDFA signings (Baldwin, J. Johnson, Jeanpierre, Morgan, Gresham). Then there's that Brandon Browner guy they got from Canada. After three years I'd easily give them an A-minus grade overall

  • JS/PC really blew it giving up a first and two fifth round draft picks to the St. Louis Cardinals for Kelly Stouffer. Obviously they are not infallible!

  • Another way to look at the mistake is that it allowed Bennett the chance to get alot of playing time. If he was here he would have been a specialist at best at least in the start, and might not have gotten to refine any of the skills he did while playing actual games.

We let him get seasoned in Tampa, and got him back =o)
