Rog basically wants to guarantee his favorite teams even if they are mediocre or suck (ie 2012 cowboys and stealers) a playoff spot. Good gawd how I hate Rog Goodell, and I was hating Rog before it was cool!

It probably won't happen. NFL union shot down the 18 game idea, and that one didn't even extend the season since it cut into the preseason. Also, there are a lot of bad things about expanding the playoffs.

First, the NHL and NBA regular seasons are nearly insignificant due to being too permissive with their 16 team playoff slates. The NFL strikes a nice balance where making the playoffs is a challenge and shouldn't be taken for granted, while still allowing for a few non-elite teams to make it. So the product would be worse if it expanded. That's problem #1.

Second, I've given it a lot of thought and expanding the playoffs either means adding pre-wildcard round like major league baseball just did, or eliminating the bye week and having every team play in the first weekend. I think the first idea could be okay if the union agreed to it and bye week teams didn't mind having two weeks off instead of one, but the 2nd idea would suck. It would make playoff seeding far less relevant. Nothing in sports comes even close to fighting for a bye in the NFL. Given that road teams have done well in recent years in the playoffs, it would make seeding close to worthless and by extension, it would make the regular season far less compelling.

If you wanna add games, make the playoffs a double elimination. Wild card teams start off with one loss. It would eliminate games like SBXL where you only get one chance as well as eliminate teams that shouldn't really even be there but got there on fluke play or just had a day where the ball just bounced right.

Correct the problems with how it is set up now as well as adding high profile viewing.

The expanded playoffs mentioned by ol' Rog yesterday was a distraction ploy. The commish just got the first slice of his neutering when Tags handed down his bountygate decision, and Rog is pulling a look over here trick with the expanded playoffs.

Don't underestimate the influence the Taglibue has over the owners. Roger has a brewing mutiny on two fronts. He is universally hated by the players like no commish has ever been, and so far has had the support of the owners, but it is eroding. But his blind efforts to protect the shield have led him to actually tarnish the shield himself, a path that was inevitable the second he usurped the authority to hand down punishments before due process.

The article isn't wrong. The 2010 Seattle Seahawks were mediocre.

They were worse than mediocre. See: Charlie Whitehust vs the Giants at home. Or Hasselbeck on the road vs the Raiders.

Soooooooo...let's protect the players by making it so they cannot tackle or even graze the QB...but then make them play Thursdays with little rest and add more games?

And this is why I stopped watching the NHL. What's the point when nearly every team makes it into the playoffs???

Why does this idiot feel the need to tinker with the game every week...

As unfortunate as it may be to have our team cited for mediocrity in this article, it's difficult to argue the point. 7-9 is not a mark of excellence, regardless of how incredible it was to see our Hawks beat the Saints. Expanding the playoffs is an unnecessary money grab for a league that doesn't need it, and it will only increase the number of mediocre teams in the tournament. IMHO, beating the Saints is what we can hang our hats on, being the first team under .500 to make the playoffs is not. :stirthepot:
