I just heard that Detroit was 8 for 8 on third down in the second half. Wow. Shore that up and things can only get better!

Spoke on third downs and said they need to work on them, and said the Lions out executed us on the last drive.

Talked about having a chance to win every game so far in the first half and how we need to execute better down the stretch

Defensively we were disappointed...uncharacteristic...things to correct and we are going to work on it and get better at it.

Big focus on QB....had a very prosperous first half and has grown and shown his character and athleticism, but he needs to improve just like the rest of the team, especially on third down and redzone

We are good at running, becoming more proficient at passing...rock solid in Special teams....looking for more big plays there. Going to continue to ride the defense

Against the lions we made a few mistakes of guys being just a little out of place and they took advantage of every one of them.

Pointed out the Linebackers as a group that had some trouble executing.

Said we just weren't as sharp as we should have been. We'll continue to improve.

asked about not enough pressure in 3rd and long, he said that our 4 man rushes weren't very effective. Said our rush timing was a little off and that we missed having Jones out there this week.

Said he thought it was the most solid performance so far for Wilson...called Wagner a surprise for being as far along as he is, but said Bruce is doing what they expected so far.

They thought Stafford would throw more down the field, and were a bit surprised at how much he used the quick underneath passes instead of the big plays you generally see from the Lions.

Said he'd like to see us in the low 30 to upper 20 percent on 3rd down conversions (I believe we are in the 40's off the top of my head)

Asked about the challenge flag....said it was a "blunder"..said he "screwed up". Pretty much repeated what he said earlier on KIRO

Asked about the types of calls being made on 3rd and long being different and he said sure they are different. (didn't really expound on it more than to say teams aren't expected to run)

Called the Miller TD throw/catch "terrific"

Likes the way the penalties are coming around and looks like it could be a factor that works for us in the second half.

Asked if being on the road affects the pass rush... He said he thinks it's more that being at home affects the rush more than being away affects it.

Robinson and Obo....they are seeing specialists and he doesn't know

Tate is ok

We'll know more later on injuries.....longshot on Baldwin this week

Still talking about possibilities with Thurmond coming back

Edwards has "a condition" stiff knee with swelling. Says there's no damage, they have to see how it goes, but they anticipate that he'd be ok.

Says they are looking at all the options right now with the injuries piling up on WR

Asked about Lynch and he said how much of a team player he is. Said he's got great heart, great style and it was nice to see him get a chance to show some speed for a change.

Said Turbin's been a good spark off the bench. He runs the whole game plan. Blocks well, catches well and that he's doing his part in special teams.

No questions or answers in regard to injuries to either Lynch or Turbin (for those who wanted to know

Well, Stafford checked down more because that's what works. It's what GB, NE, SF and now Detroit did.

Honestly he went on for awhile talking about how we didn't expect them to use the underneath passing game so much, but never came out and said we should have done this or we didn't do that. Mostly just said that we had guys (mentioned the LB group specifically) being in the wrong places and the timing being just off a little bit

He also was asked about the outspoken/brash talk coming from the defense the past few weeks. Said the players are getting a feel of how things are done and that he personally doesn't like to have distractions but the trash talk is not a problem at this time. Just not the way he likes doing things. He said if it became a problem, they would address it. Wanted to make sure whomever is speaking out is speaking for the whole team and not just themselves. He wants the players to be cognizant of the messaging they are delivering.

He also mentioned that they thought Stafford would get antsy to hit the deeper plays, unlike Brady and others who chewed them up on the short stuff. Said that Stafford played a smart game and didn't get impatient.

Definitely. Maybe he should drop his pants at half time.

Okay, I can KINDA see that point. I guess makign the Lions use patience with their scoring is an okay strategy. But, just "okay".

Carroll is probably still stuck in the old Raiders days, thinking Stafford is like the Mad Bomber. I think that is why he likes Wilson. Bombs away mofo!

At this point Pete should realize that opposing offenses see what we do and don't do well and game plan for it. It sounds like we need to do some self scouting instead of relying on only what the opposing offense is known for.

I for one fully expect to see Minny run a lot of underneath stuff, RB passes and screens.

Need to sniff that stuff out boys!

Kitna would smoke Ponder in a strongest arm competition. So, yeah, Minny will go underneath, they have no choice.

I have a feeling that'll be okay in this game. Play tight, press coverage, trust the ability of your DB's and LB's to tackle, and DONT respect Ponder's arm. Even Ponder doesn't respect his arm.

I like how he says they were surprised by all the underneath stuff. But there were no adjustments to it. In fact, it got worse in the 2nd half.

I'm starting to worry about in game adjustments from this coaching staff.

I am a bit more concerned out our suddenly gashable rush D going against Peterson.

We'll need to key in on him. Wagner and KJ both have the speed to stop him from gashing us too badly, but I worry about him on 3rd down unless we can get a good rush going and mess up Ponder's rhythm. The 12th man will help, as they always do.

Harvin on a shallow crossing pattern has been a great 3rd down play for Minny this year as well. We do not have one player who can hip pocket him, and Tru will be dead meat single covering Harvin.

Thomas could, but we can't afford to move him up that high.

The fact that they ARE doing something different on third down is idiotic. I think they defend the pass fine from their base run defense when teams randomly try to pass on what would seem obvious running downs. We switch personnel for third and long and the defense gets burned at like a 75% clip. Why not just stay with the base D on a third down sometime and see what happens. For hell's sake. I'd try it. I'm sure 99% of you would.

It just reminds me so much of those infamous "prevent defenses" (yes I know they are different). Why change what's worked for something that doesn't? If something is working, go with it until they can beat you.

I liken it to a team running 5-6 yards every play, almost never being stopped, then when the other team is expecting you to pass with 4 minutes to go in a 2 point game, you actually pass the ball. Sometimes I believe NFL coaches can outthink themselves

I think they out think themselves all the time. I'm sort of over the top though. I'm one of those that believe that the move away from punting entirely is a smart thing based on the studies that have been done. I see the value in punting..... in order to keep your job. But I also see the value in not punting because of the statistical probability of winning more games as the studies have shown by increased opportunities to score and how punting itself is just a remnant of a bygone era where "field position" was more important and teams weren't even throwing the ball.

Perhaps we both saw the same program. The one I saw featured a coach (HS?) as well as some math guy from Chicago University. There was a definite formula in place but the coach almost never punted and he also onside kicked like EVERY opportunity. It was nuts. The guy had like 12 different formations. His team won state champs...repeatedly.

But the math on not punting was incredible. I think they showed that you should never punt if outside of your own 40. We have a great punter, which sort've changes things abit, but how many times do you see a ball punted into the endzone and consequently netting like 10 yds?

OTOH, I also see benefit in punting on 3rd down. Some may recall Elway doing it frequently. 3rd and 25? Screw it....line up in shotgun formation, take the snap and boot it deep with no return man awaiting the punt. The Chicago math guy wouldn't dig it but...

If something works, go with it until the play before they beat you. This is not a minor difference in philosophy. At issue is whether you use the same strategy regardless of situation, or if you attempt to optimize your strategy based on the situation.

I agree that coaches can outsmart themselves, but you would need to have a vanishingly small opinion of your coaching staff if you wanted to hamstring them with the same defense regardless of score differential.

In other words, he got outcoached by Linehan... him being "surprised" doesn't give me much confidence in Pete's or his staff's ability to anticipate what an opposing team is going to do each week. It's like he employs a "wait and see" approach and then reacts to it, only when it's too late, instead of being steps ahead of the opponent. For a defensive coach, I expect more.
