Where does our Rookie RB stack up compared to other drafted RB's. Seems our new RB has made some contribution to Seattle being the 3rd most rushing yard per game but not been a standout.

Name, Yds, YPC, TD's
Phillip Lindsay, 591, 5.4, 5
Saquon Barkley, 519, 4.7, 5
Kerryon Johnson, 503, 4.8, 1
Sony Michel, 422, 4.4, 4
Nick Chubb, 403, 5.4, 4
Royce Freeman, 309, 4.4, 4
Nyheim Hines, 238, 4.6, 1
Jordan Wilkins, 235, 4.5, 0
Ito Smith, 178, 3.6, 4
Rashaad Penny, 146, 3.5, 0
Josh Adams, 107, 5.4, 0
Ronald Jones, 42, 2.2, 1
Mark Walton, 24, 1.8, 0
Kalen Ballage, 8, 2.0, 0
Derrius Guice, 0, 0, 0

Bo Scarbrough, 0, 0, 0

So our rookie has outperformed 4th rounders Walton and Ballage and been outplayed by UDFA Lindsay, 5th rounder Wilkins, 4th rounder Smith, 4th rounder Hines, 3rd rounder Hines, 2nd rounder Chubb, 2nd rounder Johnson, 31st pick Michel and Barkley. That’s quite interesting.

Our prized rookie has also lit it up in the return game- 17.5 avg-2nd last in the NFL in return avg for anyone with 4 or more returns. https://www.footballdb.com/stats/stats. ... &limit=100

Lindsay, Barkley and Johnson are not on offensive juggernauts either. Hell, Lindsay shared backfield duties until Freeman got hurt.

Says a lot about the talent evaluation talent. UDFA leads all rookie RB. Was not even invited to the combine. Who are these guys???

Most of those teams didn’t have a decent back in their stable. Necessity leads to numbers.

And general draft crapshoots.

Maybe with Carson hurt, we’ll see more Penny. Or he’s a complete bust and wasted first rounder and we are doomed.

With all due respect, I don't think any kind of judgement can be issued on Penny yet. He hasn't been used too frequently. 146 yards is barely a snapshot of his capabilities. He's had limited exposure.

I think the only argument would be 'why draft him in the first round if they're not going to use him?'. Well there could be a lot of reasons. The easiest and most obvious choice would be he hasn't produced when given the opportunity. But there is always information that we do not know that would answer these questions.

Are they comfortable with his handling of the playbook?
Does he have some tendencies that they want to correct before letting him develop bad habits?
Is he nursing an injury?
Are they saving his legs for a fresh second half RB?

We'll never know the answers to those (except maybe generic coach-speak). But we just might start to see just how good he is with Carson going down.

Doesn't have to be this dire and extreme.

Carson is obviously a great back, but again he's proving why we drafted a RB in the first round.........he's not durable enough to make it through an entire season with the style in which he runs.

So yes, we will see more of Penny this year with Carson wearing down with nagging injuries. So we'll see.

RE: Penny.
What about missing the majority of his 1-st ever NFL preseason due to hand injury? Bell cow type RB's need carries to show what they have (ala Beast mode) missing most of the preseason is and was a setback for Penny, he just needs time to get up to speed, hopefully, we'll see him get more carries with Carson injured - again.

With RW, who is running & scrambling less, it's likely not due to injury or getting older and slower but because Shotty is trying to get him to play more like a "normal" QB and stay or step up in the pocket. This is pretty new to RW because he's seldom had a good pocket in the past. It will take a little time for RW to adjust completely to Shotty's requirements.
IMO.

Disappointed he didn’t get the ball more. Felt he deserved more than anyone else. He had his first run of the season which only resulted in 3 yards that I thought - he gets it. Run full speed into the gap, even without much space, and drove the defenders back. He had been so tentative up to this point and let defenders close in on him.

He is averaging 4.7 ypc on the season. Feels good to be the primary guy supporting him. As I said last week....this will turn out the same way Flynn and Russ did.
