Michael Dickson named Punter of the Week (Preseason Game 2)

The Essential Online Seattle Football Fan Forum Community. There simply is NO substitute. LANGUAGE RATING: PG-13
  • Dickson continued his strong professional debut with three punts averaging 53.0 net yards per kick. He knocked two of them inside the opponent’s 20-yard line and did a great job of not over-kicing his coverage as only two of the three were returned for a measly one yard.

  • Already the best punter in the league? It’s only preseason, so we are probably getting ahead of ourselves, but you have to like what we have seen so far from the rookie.

Preseason Punter of the Week, though.

Punting and kicking in the preseason are a lot more indicative of regular season ability and success, so this bodes well.

  • Legitimate question on hang time - does Dallas' stadium negate Dickson's booming kicks as there's a dirty great tv screen hanging from the ceiling? Do other roofed stadiums need to be accounted for? Is the returner in Denver just going to take Opening Day off?

5 seconds of air time suggests Dickson's kicks are up near the ceiling in most domes.

(Yes, I know this year's matchup is in Seattle, but one punter has already managed to hit that screen since it was installed, and the coffee has kicked in here.)

  • I didnt watch the whole game but the one punt I saw from Dickson looked like the returner was watching the ball do circles in the air. I have a feeling he's gonna cause quite a few muffed punts.

Lets hope the coaches don’t start instructing their returners to just don’t try to catch the balls. Might be safest to just don’t lineup one

  • Cut him. Ryan will make this team for some unknown reason.

What's Dickson going to do, back up the other team to make the opposing offense's drive that much longer and take that much more time off the clock wearing down our defense? No thanks.

Ok, got my negatively out of the system. Go Hawks!

  • Dickson averaged 53.6 yards in Preseason Game 3 on five punts, including one that bounced out of bounds at the three-yard line and one that bounced out at the one-yard line.

  • They were commenting last night, that he actually has several different punts that he uses depending on situation.

    Not unlike a BB pitcher.

I’d assume that all punters have a couple or three but 6-7, I find that crazy cool.

I’m also excited to watch him progress, I just hope he doesn’t get too many opportunities.

    YMMV

That was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in football, and he essentially did it in two consecutive punts.

If Dickson were a poor tackler, we probably wouldn't care because of the above, but he excels there too -- not every punter can lay a solid tackle on a returner like he did later in the game, especially a rookie punter.

  • Watching him warm up and practice at TC was the most entertaining thing I can remember seeing there in recent years. At first it was just odd. Then to watch for a while it changed from being odd and entertaining to being really impressive. We were able to go 2 days in a row this year. By the time we left on the second day I was grabbing people next to me pointing at him and saying, "watch this...". It's really hard to imagine unless you see him kick about 30 in a row. He's not 100% consistent, but maybe 8 out of 10 will land in the same spot and bounce in the same direction. Then he'll change and 8 of the next 10 will bounce in a different direction. ... that's after about 20-25 minutes of ballerina stretching and weird pacing and lunges up and down the field and kicking while standing on one foot .... He comes out to start about 30 minutes before anyone else and is the only one on the field besides the trainers and field crew playing catch.

  • It's funny someone says Ray Guy and then they talk about Dickson's tackling, Ray lobbied his whole career to Al to let him work at Safety, where he played also in High School, Al kept saying someday maybe, he would tackle on Special teams as well.

Guy changed Special teams and the punt team forever and tilted the field in a way nobody knew could be done and they had to adjust for him, his hang time and placement was unheard of at the time, from what we are seeing Dickson is like as someone said the Pitcher or closer in baseball that can beat you with a 110 mile fastball or throw a Knuckle ball or slider that drops off the map at will.

Michael Dickson, Seattle Seahawks – 70.8
For the second week in a row, it’s the Seahawks’ rookie punter earning the nod here, making it clear that he has every chance to be one of the top punters in the NFL even as a rookie. Dickson averaged 45.6 net yards this week, and an average of 4.81 seconds of hang time per kick.

    4.81 hang time. 8)

Only knock was outkicking the coverage on the punt where he made the tackle. Otherwise his net yards would be great.

Even so, a 70.8 grade seems way too low when a kicker pins two kicks at the three-yard line. His grade for the game should have been in the 90s.
