I don't know that there is much in the way of free agent offensive tackles out there. They do have the highly versatile Ethan Pocic to fall back on. And, it may be that they expect to get back both of the offensive tackles they lost to injuries during the opener.

I was hoping Jalston Fowler would pan out at FB but he couldn’t beat out Tre Madden. I’m not sure what they are seeing in Madden because he was a terrible lead blocker last season.

Versatility and maybe bring it energy is what they see in Tre Madden. Madden is also valued for special teams work. Changes to kick off rules may have enhanced his value.

With regards to fullback, the preference for versatility shows up again in the value they place on tighends that can line up in multiple positions. There are at least two such tight ends on the current roster who can help with a fullback role.

Specialists were a problem last year to the extent that they tipped the offenses hand. So the departure of a fullback specialist in Fowler may be for reasons similar to the departure of tight end specialists.

Hill and Fowler had been out about a week each with injury. I was hoping one of them could beat out brick hands and bad lead blocking Madden, but it is what it is. He's both available and a good STer.

I'm not a huge Madden fan either (spoiled by Mack Strong) but Tre did have one fine lead block against the Colts that absolutely rocked one of their LBs. Blew him backwards off of his feet.

There was the 8/8 addition of Gerald Holmes ......

"I can give you a little bit of everything," he told MLive before the 2018 NFL Draft. "I'm a fast back for my size, I've got good lateral movement, strong, I'm going to fall forward. I'm a special teams guy, I can catch the ball, I can block. I'm a guy who, when I'm on the field, I'm going to produce. ... I'm a guy who can carry a team. I feel like you're going to get an all-around player, a leader." ---- Gerald Holmes

.......... I'm looking forward to seeing where he lines up and what his role might be.

That's seriously awesome. Would love to be proven wrong about his blocking.
