Seahawks roster high school recruiting rankings

As many of you who go into the college forum know, i really enjoy following high school recruiting. Thought it would be interesting to see where the current Seahawks started. And just for reference, every year there are about 30 5 stars, 300 4 stars and 1400 3 stars ranked.

Here's where our current Seahawks were rated coming out of high school. Sheldon Richardson was our only 5 star high school player.

Just goes to show you a kid in high school is rarely the young man he becomes at 23 and more so at 35.

CJ Procise was a safety coming out of HS? Hmmmm, he can't stay healthy as a RB in this league. Maybe they could convert him back to safety and he might have a career. It's not like the position change would be completely foreign to him. Might be worth a shot. Him doing the hitting instead of getting hit could be better for his health.

Bobby Wagner is the one that blows me away. Dude must have got amazing coaching in college, hit a major growth spurt, or just utilized a massive chip on his shoulder to make it. Or maybe all 3.

Might as well..
He wasn't a RB at ND till injuries put him there and then he got hurt after so many games
that season.
He has been a WR and CB/Safety..He seems to like being moved

Interesting..

I’m not entirely versed on how they rate teenagers, but looking at that list there appears to be a bit of a bonus/bias attached to the bigger programs (Michigan, Ohio State, LSU, A&M) . Joeckel better than Bobby or Doug? Not at any level, high school included.

Thanks for all the research and time you spent putting those grades all together.
Some really eye opening grades on there for sure.

I have a feeling Bobby developed late. Remember he is only 6ft tall. He was probably only like 200lbs back then.

Bigger-name college programs tend to attract more 4 and 5 star recruits.

Being lineman-sized and any kind of athlete typically = high star rating out of high school (joeckel). They're not always right.

Very cool to see that, thanks for the hard work. It would be fun to see how that compares to someone like the Patriots.

Wagner was more in line to play RB in high school and then turned into a body builder basically. Kam was recruited to VT to play QB originally, then played CB, FS and then Rover. Either could have their ratings as a RB or QB respectively.

I think early physical development may play a role in this, i.e., 5-stars are typically more physically mature at an earlier age that other players. While their 5-star status doesn't necessarily equate to stardom they probably are better equipped to start early.

This is really more likely. It's not uncommon for guys to float around and then play their best ball at 26 years old or even later in some rarer cases.

There's also a lot of cases where it's just guts and dedication too.

Two things:


1: The Seahawks have almost no first round draft picks playing for the team. I bet if you did this chart for the Browns and Eagles their team would be loaded with 5-star players.


2: These star rating systems are completely arbitrary. You only have to watch about one 4 year cycle of recruiting and playing to realize that the numbers don't mean a damn thing. News flash players in big states get higher star ratings.

You also have programs that redshirt so to speak players to get championships, 19 year old seniors in High School, really these guys get two years on the 17 and just turned 18 year old average players and are truly men among boys and rate higher.

Wagner was lanky and skinny in HS. He was focused mostly on basketball until his junior year. When he realized he wasn't going to grow beyond 6'0, he finally turned his focus to football. Then he starred at TE and OLB (100+ tackles each season for two years, all-state selection, HS football team won CIF, etc.). It's hard for players who are not on the radar at the beginning of junior year to become nationally-regarded recruits, especially if they are not showcasing themselves at the camp circuit, putting out highlight reels, etc. His raw athleticism was apparent, especially as a receiver, but he never received the attention of the scouting services or from any of the top college programs. Wagner only received one scholarship offer (Utah State), and it didn't come until a week before signing day. He was an instant success in college, though, starting all four years and recording over 400 tackles.

You're right about Kam. I didnt notice it when I originally looked them up but they have him as a pro-style qb. They had him as the 32nd best pro style QB in the class, 4 spots ahead of TJ Yates who has started some games in the NFL.

Bobby is listed at the 161st ranked outside linebacker in his class, out of 169 total.

Off the top of my head, Seahawks: Brown, Ifedi, Joeckel, S Richardson, Jordan, Marcus Smith, Thomas were first round picks.
Eagles: Wentz, Agholor, L Johnson,C Warmack, C Long, F Cox, D Barnett, B Graham, M Jenkins, P Robinson

That includes pending free agents. What stands out is Philly's ability to draft and develop their first round dlineman, though Seattle has done really well in free agency and outside of the first round (Naz,Frank,Jarran) on the dline.
