Seattle Times & TNT take on the hirings

  • Analysis | 5 thoughts on the Seahawks’ hirings of Brian Schottenheimer, Ken Norton Jr., and Mike Solari

The moves now are being made in hopes to stop a slide that has seen Seattle go from 13 wins and a Super Bowl title in 2013 to 12, 10, 10 and now single-digits and home for the playoffs the last four seasons

Hiring Mike Solari, Brian Schottenheimer proof of Pete Carroll re-committing to the run

When San Francisco hired Solari in 2010 after he left the Seahawks, he told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat about his 49ers linemen: “They’re gonna play with an attitude.”

Three years later, while still with the Niners on his way to the Super Bowl, Solari said: “We do want to pound you.”

  • Some good stuff from TNT:

The run game in 2017 would have been 32nd, dead last, in the NFL if not for the 440 yards quarterback and team rushing leader Russell Wilson gained scrambling away from defenders on called pass plays.

Here are some of the NFL rankings in rushing offense Solari's teams have had since 1997, when he became the offensive line coach of the Kansas City Chiefs and then the 49ers: fifth, fourth, sixth, third, fifth, fourth, ninth, eighth, fourth, third and fourth.

Schottenheimer’s offense ran it a whopping 607 times in 2009.
The only other NFL team in the last 31 years to run the ball 600 times in a season is the 2004 Pittsburgh Steelers (618 rushes).

  • I found this interesting, rom Mike Solari's time with the New York Giants,

    MIKE SOLARI

In Solari’s 18 seasons serving as an NFL team’s primary offensive line coach, his players combined for 25 Pro Bowl appearances and at least one of his players was selected to the Pro Bowl in 15 of those seasons.

Last season, Solari’s linemen allowed 22 sacks –five fewer than the Giants surrendered in 2015 – and the third-lowest total in the league after Oakland (18) and Pittsburgh (21).

Injuries forced Solari to use seven different starting offensive line combinations in 2016.

  • Very happy to have him back and looks like Pete is molding the team back to a run first offense with these hirings.

  • It’s geeat Pete wants to get back to the run but it does us no good with all the glass china doll running backs. We need a consistent 1-2 running back punch. Blunt would of been a great addition the previous offseason. We need guys that have a proven record and can stay healthy.

  • With a track record like that, why was Solari even available? Did he just get cleaned out with McAdoo? Looks like he's been bounced around the league quite a bit, actually.

  • Liking the ingredients thus far, not loving, but liking. Now let's see how the draft works out as well as FA so we can see if the gumbo comes out close to mom's. I do agree with the above post about our RB stable.

Pete has never wavered on wanting his team being a run first offense. Now if we can actually gain yards running that will be something different.

  • Ironic that a full-on attempt to get back to the run game is Pete's version of Hail Mary regarding his time left here in Seattle.

Hope it works, but as others have said, we need some backs who can run AND stay healthy...

I have said this in other threads, but how do you know that what we have isn't good till they can run without getting hit as they get the ball (unless your Lynch or Earl Campbell) and have actual holes available, we have had our backs taking weird wrap up hits and then have 300 pounders fall on them instead of LB's and Safeties.
