It’s driving me crazy all of the articles and fans I see saying Bennett is gone.
He signed a contract extension.
His cap number is $8,387,500 next year.(2018)
If the Hawks cut him his dead cap number is 5,212,500.
The numbers do not add up to cut him.

The Hawks are stuck with him for at least one more year due to their over eager contract extensions of aging vets.

Yeah, I think the players are just really disappointed right now and feeling insecure about the potential changes that will be made this off-season.

Bennett had a disappointing year due to his injuries, but he still led the team in sacks and played a large percentage of the snaps even with the injuries.

I wish they'd just trade him for a low draft pick at this point. He provided zero passrush, refuses to fix his offsides problems, and even if he does get a clean shot at the QB, he goes falling down.

Jordan was providing more of a passrush than Bennett today.

Bennett was playing on a bum knee and a painful injury in his foot. Hope he's healthy next year.

He still has too much value to release, someone would be willing to trade something for him.

The Seahawks could use the Post June 1 designation on both Jeremy Lane & Michael Bennett.

If the Hawks cut Bennett using the Post June 1 designation.

The Seahawks would save $5.5M in cap savings with 1,737,500 in dead money.

For Jeremy Lane it would be $6M in cap savings with 1,250,000 in dead money.

So actually the numbers could ad up to cut him if they feel like they want to move on. I have no idea though what direction the org is leaning though. Just looking at his production he is worth the money, he is not overpaid.

Even if they cut him after June 1st the dead money is the same it just gets spread to another year.

They just need to play him less now. In 2013 he was only on the field for about 50% of the defensive snaps. He needs to get back to that level of usage, it will keep him fresh.

He had 8.5 sacks this season playing full time. I expect he could do that as a pure rotational player next season.

One failure since Dan Quinn's departure has been then unwillingness to rotate fresh bodies in along the defensive line.

Whenever we did rotate someone fresh in, like Dion Jordan for a few players or Garrison Smith or Quinton Jefferson or Nazair Jones, it seemed the number of splash plays skyrocketed.

I would love to see a return to the 2013 style defense of constant DL rotation.

Bennett is one of the best DEs we've ever had. My All-Time team features him and Jacob Green.

Not a good sign when your team leader in sacks has less than 10. The whole pass rush needs improvement.

As for Bennett, cap hit or not, and despite injuries, I don't see his performance projecting well next year.

Honestly believe he wants to win (watch his after 49 interview). Despite his injuries,,,,, he played well for us this year.

Mod edit - removing talk of other discussions.

Yeah I'm aware of that, but to say his dead money hit is too high so they can't cut him is disingenuous. If the organization wants to move on from him they can, and save $5.5M for 2018 doing it.

That's also disingenuous, isn't it? Using the post-June 1 designation doesn't mean the remaining dead money disappears. It just gets pushed to the next season. There's still $5 million in dead money spread out over two seasons.

And no, that is highly unlikely to happen with Michael Bennett. $8 million isn't even that much of a cap hit over the next couple seasons for a strong pass rusher and run defender.

We are a much worse defense without Michael Bennett.

Besides, who will line up in the neutral zone and also get several offsides calls per game? (Even when he legitimately gets off the ball at the snap, he'll still get called for offsides because the octogenarian refs can't process stuff that happens quickly.)

He's more likely to retire than get cut. Much like Earl after his injury, Mike is probably muy disappointed right now.

I suspect he'll be in camp next year, hungry as ever.

At his cap relief and age I'd at the very least like to see him come back as a late down specialist.
