Can This team be successful without Earl? I just don’t see us making the playoffs or any continued success without him.

ET plays deep middle and almost never makes a play on the deep sideline passes. It's literally not his job. This is on those particular CBs. ET would not have changed it.

Washington only scored 17. That should not win a game. Especially against an offense that just posted 40 the week before.

You don't have to dig too far for the problem. This offense sucks.

I’m not a stats guy but find me our record without Earl on the field.

Vin is right. Our CBs are responsible for the deep sideline and their one job is to not get beat deep, which Griffin did.

WTH have you been, the over the top coverage on those deep routes has been a bread and butter of our coverage since we drafted him.

Agreed what a weird post, lol. Earl literally would have been there and the Seahawks would have won.

I'm not entirely sure what the playcall was. If it was cover 1 then maybe Earl would've shaded over to Griffin. If it was a six man blitz then he probably would've been manned up on an RB or TE, unless they kept someone else in to block.

So what happens if the OC just sends two deep verts down both sidelines? Earl can't duplicate himself.

Best case, they have Kam help one and Earl the other. Worst case he chooses 1, likely preferring to leave Sherman 1 on 1 on an island than a rookie. However, the reason Earl's been so good is because traditionally he's had the speed and instincts to not break to one or the other until the QB has made his choice and then he breaks for that WR.

Earl stays in the deep middle (maybe shades toward the right side) reads the QB and makes his break as the QB locks onto his target.

The ability to read, react, and arrive in time to make a play on those deep throws is exactly what makes Thomas so special. There are few who can do that. McDougald performed admirably, but he wasn't able to provide Griffin with the help on that deep throw that Earl would have.

The secondary held up admirably in his absence, but he was clearly missed.

Sending Kam to defend the other side would require Cover 2. We almost never play that.

Think about every play you've ever seen where Sherman or your CB2 successfully defend a guy one-on-one. On all of those successful plays, Earl wasn't there, and didn't need to be, by design. It shows just how infrequently Earl actually does come over to help on those throws. Sometimes he does. The majority, he's guarding the middle.

McDougal has seen the film, and he played well just got caught cheating one way. Earl has make up speed, McDougal will have hopefully learned about getting baited.

You don’t have to be a stats guy I don’t think Earl ever missed a game until last year. They went 2-3 without him in the regular season and 1-1 in the playoffs. With the loss this season it brings it to 3-5. The good news is that they have alternated loss win every time he’s been out so this week is due for a win.
