I recall a particular late-season game against the Rams, I believe it was in 2013, possibly game #15 before the home loss to the Cards. Mostly I remember Russell running for his life, and Robert Quinn and other speedy Ram defenders catching Russell from behind multiple times, and it looked like a schitt show on pass plays. Somehow the Seahawks won that game, handily I believe; Russell pulled enough Houdini rabbits out of his freakinASS and the defense dominated the Rams. I was just hoping for Russell to not get killed and somehow survive the game without season-ending injury.
That game showed the calculation Carroll, Bevell, and apparently Schneider had made, to go cheap on the O-Line and rely on Russell's elusiveness, so the team could invest in other areas, e.g., on Defense, with Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett, etc. Starting Bowie and Bailey, plus converted D-Lineman JR Sweezy, was part of that program. In fairness, PC/JS did draft Russell Okung with the #6 pick in 2010; IIRC, Okung was injured much of 2013, probably including the Rams run-for-your-life game I mentioned above.
Drafting Haynes, to me shows the Seahawks are making an effort to build a line through draft picks. You could say that Carroll and Schneider invested in O-Line in the draft too; after all, they did draft John Moffitt in the 3rd round in 2011, hoping he'd be a cornerstone of a big, mean O-Line. Moffitt was apparently 6'4" 320. Well, Moffitt didn't really pan out. So let's just hope Haynes works out better than Moffitt and is the start of a trend of building O-Line through the draft. I notice the Ravens like to have extra-large human beings for their O-Line. We'll see if MikeMac brings that with him.
